I was just telling a buddy over lunch that I bet he got at least 3 mil a year. I am a little surprised at the signing bonus but in todays NFL it seems you have to overpay for anything. But if we had had him last year instead of Weinke and won those games down the stretch it would be worth it.

You never know what's going to happen in the NFL. Very few starters are always safe. Personally, I think the competition will push Jake to be an even better QB. I think he'll have a great year. I think the real controversy will be next year when you hear the Jake is getting old, we need to see what Carr can do if we're going to pay him a lot of money in an extension to be our starting QB. Plus, I'd heard Jake's contract gets to be a bit high after this year and could be a salary cap consideration. Two years is also plenty of time to see if Carr is was he was in Houston or if it was just the rest of his team in Texas.

Given the choice between having Chris Weinke as our back-up, or a QB "controversy", I'll gladly take the latter.

Nobody is anointing Carr the future of this franchise, but it is nice to have a guy with that potential.

    recap

Deke Cooper - should make the final roster; could even be a starter at this point
Curtis Deloatch - versitility, and history with Tim Lewis on his side
Chad Lavalais - interesting...could be a steal if he gets his head together
Dave Ball - finally in a 4-3 defense, he could suprise some people
Terrence Melton - maybe a STer, but a longshot
Stephen Williams - could make it if we keep 5 DT's, but again, unlikely
Na'il Diggs - probable starter for opening day
Kevin Youngblood - needs a great camp and preseason, but has appealing size
    John Wilson - who?
Otis Grigsby - maybe a pass rusher, and we are thin at DE
    Jason Hall - huh?
Justin McCullum - showed flashes last summer; could be a longshot
Chris Horn - he's started before, albeit briefly..sounds like a John Fox Guy
Kevin Garrett - was a decent CB prospect, if memory serves me
Alex Haynes - maybe we give him the nod over Shelton this time
Steve Sciullo - heard of the name...don't know much about him

    and Carr

I can't say I'm thrilled for that kind of money. Harrington would have been the cheaper alternative and, desptie what some may think, that aren't all that far apart in ability. My main worry is where in the hell are we going to get the cap room to extend Peppers and Smitty? The Carr signing, once coupled with the rookie signings will blow all but a couple million in remaining cap space. I realize when contracts are exended they are re-worked to be backloaded, but still, that isn't going to cut it in order to keep both Pep and Smitty.
