    Carolina Thunder is in Concord

they are co-owned by former Pittsburgh Steeler Dewayne Woodruff. We're excited to have the on the air for the first time. Byron Dinkins, the former Charlotte 49er, is one of their players. I haven't seen a game yet, but I'm told it's pretty good basketball, on the level of CBA.

well, according to a story in the Cabarrus edition of the Observer, the team is drawing very little. in fact, they hadn't paid rent at the cabarrus arena and are now playing in different rec centers.

btw, they're 7-7 in their division, tied for 7th, i think.

THUNDER NO LONGER CALLS ARENA ITS HOME

    Source: RONNIE GLASSBERG, STAFF WRITER
The Carolina Thunder, an American Basketball Association expansion team, began playing in recreation centers this week after it failed to pay rent at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center. The team owes the county $18,153 for its first five games at the arena and hasn't signed a long-term contract, county officials said. The county is in negotiations with the team to collect the money.Paid attendance averaged 157 at those first five games, ranging from 65 people on Nov. 23 to 243

Wow, not paying the bills is a bad way to start off your franchise.

    Yes a slow start but...

county officials here are working with them trying to help and get them back to the arena eventually. Tied for 5th place in East. They've already been a benefit to the local basketball community because they were able to give the county a reason to get basketball court and scoreboard so high school teams and other could play. Already a good bit of interest in the area for conference tournaments and even some college games so still good for Cabarrus County long term.

Paying $3600 a game in rent? That's a great way to kill a minor league franchise.

    More bad news

The Philadelphia Fusion folded today and won't play tonight or Saturday against the Carolina Thunder. That is the second ABA opponent of the Thunder to fold in the last week. WEGO-AM plans to broadcast the next home game coming up Feb. 4 against Maryland, but we don't have details yet on location for the game.
