Fair enough, but it bothers me that he seems like a potentially great MLB who will be a little above average at WLB. Way too early to reach that conclusion, it's just a bad feeling I'm getting.

This thread should be re-titled- "Hurney's Legacy"

Glad the stupid bastard is gone but he will not be soon forgotten. We're screwed financially for a couple of years thanks to his gross mismanagement.

Just so I understand the #'s, using Beason as an example.

Jon Beason - $9.5 million, $13 million if cut

I'm assuming $9.5m is his salary, is the $13m the amount of accelerated bonus making his net cap hit $3.5m (13 - 9.5)....or is $13m the net cap hit implying accelerated bonus is $22.5m (13 + 9.5).

I think I know the answer but just want clarity before going through with my plan to close the garage door and start the car.

9,5 million is his cap hit if nothing changes

13 million is his cap hit with acceleration penalty less his base salary of 5.25 million.

This is as I understand it, I get lost in this cap stuff sometimes

anything that happens at this point in the year, the rest of the cap hit goes to next year and pretty much everything for this year is already counted.
None of that is really relevant at this point since no one big is going to get cut, and it's very unlikely anyone gets traded. I'd almost prefer that they not really even listen, since no one has any experience to not get fleeced.

But, like the Wharton cut, any of these big cuts would probably end up being counted as a June cut (the cap hit, minus the proration for the current year, all goes to the following year), which none of this analysis is set up as.

The total amount of the cap hit stays the same.

Absolutely, but the year it's done there's a massive difference on cap space. It's not ideal but it's much more likely.

The point of this thread is to provide the total amounts since those are the only definites. But for the record, spreading dead money into future seasons only prolongs the cap difficulty. I agree that the Panthers are likely to make some of them June 1st cuts, but I would rather deal with one disaster season to clear all of that dead money and then head into the following season with cap room and the ability to take the franchise in a new direction.

Agreed and if we are going to get rid of players if we can get ANY picks for them then do so. Like I have said before tear it apart and start anew with a plan

I know what the more fiscally responsible option is, just seems odd to totally leave out a likely option for preference.
