Pretty sure Duke clinched this weeked 13.5 to 12.5

Only possible change is if Duke meets UNC in the womens lacrosse Acc tourney. A UNC win would cause a tie as Duke won in the regular season.

Sadly I'm betting that most UNC AND Duke fans that visit here have no clue as to what the Carlyle Cup even is.

The seventh annual Carlyle Cup between Carolina and Duke is not over. It could be decided Friday on the lacrosse field. Or maybe not, if the schools were to meet in the NCAA Tennis Championships.

Carolina currently trails the all-sports competition with Duke, 13.5 to 12.5, with all 26 points already allocated. However, the Tar Heels have a chance to avenge regular-season losses to Duke in both men's and women's lacrosse in their respective ACC Tournaments.

Since Carolina currently holds the Carlyle Cup, 13 points are needed to retain it for another year. Duke must finish with at least 13.5 points to take the Cup back for the first time since 2004.

Carolina can even the season series in men's lacrosse and win back a half-point Friday night in the ACC Tournament semifinals at Duke. The same could be possible on Friday afternoon in women's lacrosse if UNC defeats Virginia Tech Thursday and advances to the ACC Tournament semifinals against Duke in Chapel Hill.

If the Tar Heels were to win either lacrosse match, they would have the 13 points needed to retain the Carlyle Cup.

Other, more remote, possibilities would be if the Carolina and Duke men's and women's tennis teams were to face each other in the NCAA Championships. The Tar Heel men lost to Duke in their dual match on April 11 and could potentially win back a half-point. The UNC women defeated Duke on April 15, so the Blue Devils could win back a half-point there if they were to meet in the NCAAs.

At this point, the only certainty is that the Carlyle Cup isn't over yet.

That's not bad considering dook started at a 2 handicap this time rather than the normal 1.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The No. 9-ranked University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team will seek its first win in Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament play since 1996 Friday night when the Tar Heels meet No. 2-ranked Duke at 8:30 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The game will be the second semifinal game Friday. No. 3-ranked Virginia meets No. 6-ranked Maryland in the opening game of the tournament at 6 p.m. Duke is the tournament's No. 1 seed, while Virginia is No. 2, Maryland No. 3 and North Carolina No. 4. Virginia is the defending ACC Tournament champion while Maryland won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. North Carolina is the nation's most improved team in 2007, having rebounded from a 4-10 finish in 2006 to post a 9-4 record through 13 games of the 2007 season. The Tar Heels head into the ACC Tournament having lost only one game outside of the league this year. Duke is 11-2 and finished the ACC regular season at 3-0. Friday's semifinal games will be webcast live on accselect.com with Michael Crowe providing the play-by-play and Stephen McElduff doing th analysis. Live stats will also be provided via CSTV Gametracker at www.TarHeelBlue.com. The winners of the two semifinal games on Friday will meet for the ACC championship on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. That game will be broadcast live on the Regional Sports Network with play-by-play by Bob Rathbun and color commentary by former UNC head coach Willie Scroggs.

Potential Carlyle Cup Score Change: If North Carolina defeats Duke it could affect the result of the 2006-07 Carlyle Cup race. Duke currently leads the race 13.5 points to 12.5 points. North Carolina and Duke also play in women's lacrosse Friday and their our NCAA possibilities that the two schools could play again in men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's tennis and women's tennis.

Just found out the older guy who works in the office next to ours is a d-1 lacrosse ref. He opened his SUV and it was filled ref jerseys. We talked and he does a lot work in North and South Carolina. Cool guy.

It has a little to do with Scroggs, but more of the reason for our lull was the resurgence of the Princeton's, Loyola's, Towson's, Cornell's and the growth of Duke and some others. The coaching changes didn't help either though.
