Careful Real

ECU, NC State, App State, WCU......none of those schools are UNC-hyphened. No offense, but alot of us don't want to be associated with UNC. We don't mind being in the 16 school system, UNCC is just too easy to confuse with UNC around the country. Furthermore, the list goes on forever where Niners have done things on a national level only to be said they were from UNC! This has become a real sticking point to most UNCC alumni. Plus in our conference, every school goes by their city (Memphis, Cincy, Louisville, Houston, etc)

There is more prestige in the name University of Charlotte than UNCC. Hyphen schools rarely get out of big brothers shadow.

 

It's just like how USC thinks they're the "real Carolina" too right?

I consider USC the real Carolina.

Savio, don't know how old you are, but as you get a little older you will probably see more value in being independent of the UNC hyphen. Eventually you will grow tired of the confusion. Besides, nobody is a real Niner until they hate UNC.

I differ a wee bit from Metro. I hate all Non-NIner hoop teams equally.

not a rival? wtf? of course not, they won't play us! They are a rival in the sense that any true Niner hates UNC because UNC thinks their shit doesn't stink and that Charlotte's program is the sisters of the poor. Are you one of those UNCC students who wears Tarheel gear on UNCC's campus? I'm just messin with ya, but you won't get far with this crowd being a UNC apologist.

 

Fair enough on those names but only ASU doesn't clearly show from its that it's from Carolina system. I still don't understand the big deal though - and to be honest you should consider it a privilege to be confused with UNC.

You can get upset all you want, but UNCC is not and never has been Carolina's rival. And I don't think our shit doesn't stink, but be honest - how would you classify UNC's basketball history to UNCC's? Carolina can have anybody in the nation in a home-home series with one phone call. Are you saying that they should schedule UNCC over UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas, Georgetown, UConn, etc.? Honestly - and I am not trying to be an ass or get on a high horse or anything - what does UNC have to gain by playing UNCC?

by playing UNCC over UConn? UCLA? Kansas - although that might actually become a death match now? If UNC was playing a crappy non conference schedule - then I would be right there with you, but we always play one of the toughest around. Our problem over the last few years is that we just haven't been able to win.

Edit - the only reason that I think that we should play UNCC is if we have a kid form Charlotte and play his "home" game here.

 

vp, I did not mean we were rivals on the court. But my point is that any real 49er should dislike UNC, and most do. The last two times we played UNC, it went overtime, and it is bullshit that UNC is afraid to play a top 30-40 program that is two hours away.

anyway, back on topic, It would be fantastic if we dropped the UNC from our name, and most alumni support that, IMO. To continue with our Athletics and school having two separate names is stupid, and the Athletics made the right decision to be "Charlotte" alone.
