Allright. I got bored and did some digging.

Here's who I think should get cut:

    Mangum - $650k.

We've got Walls, Crawford, and Heinrich. We've got a 4th guy, Inkrott, who could goto the developmental squad. We don't need him, and I don't think he got much of a signing bonus to eat over the next couple of years.

    Jason Kyle - $525k.

He's a longsnapper, we've signed Amato. Amato is cheaper, we get the whole amount from Kyle.

    Melvin Tuten - $700k.

We just don't need him. Jeno James, Campion, Terry could slide over, a number of options.

    Joe Montgomery - $450k

We don't need him. We have Dee brown and Nick Goings for cheaper. We have Michael Bates who's being used as an RB in camp. We have nothing invested in him, we got him off of waivers.

    Damien Richardson - $525k

This is a reacher, we just re-signed him. WP - did we give him a bonus? We're deep at safety. We've got Deke Cooper for cheaper. We've got Billy Dee Greenwood. I wouldn't be upset to keep him, I'm just trying to get our picks signed.

    LUCKY BUST:
Rashard Anderson saved us $650k this year by being a crackhead.

    RESTRUCTURES:

Jay Williams. We should be able to extend and add bonus, and pay him minimum this year. We oughta be able to save about $800k.

At this point - we've cleared about $4.3 million, which just might be enough. I'm not 100% - WP28 What do you think?

    If $4.3 million ain't enough:

Moose - $3.2 million salary this year. If we restructured to $650k, we save $1.5 million this year. Next year, however, he'd kill us at about $6.5 million. Tough call here, but we might need the $$$ to sign our picks.

it's not inconceivable that we lose Richardson. We got him back to keep a good special teams' contingent, and since then we've made other acquisitions. Tuten is easily gone.

Long shot, easy money - if we trade Williams, which we've supposedly had offers for, we save the whole salary of $1.6 mil.
If we cut Donnalley, we save over $1 mil, just off memory.

  3. You've mentioned a lot of people to be cut and I agree with most of them. But the problem is that most of these guys are not likely to be cut prior to summer camp. They are the kind to get cut on the final cut after you know who your starters are and how good your depth is and who has been lost to injury during camp and pre-season. That means you're cutting them too late to do you any good in signing our rookies since they have to be signed before summer camp begins.

As for the amount, the league assigned us something in excess of $5MM for signing our rookies, so that's a pretty big number to have to reach by cutting guys that are only counting $500-800 on the cap. I think we'll need to get most of the cap space by restructuring contracts and moving salary into the bonus column like we have done with Gilbert over each of the last 3 years. The bad news there is that it keeps making the late years in a contract even more expensive and limits your ability to cut these guys and get any cap relief.

No two ways about it, we've got a real problem and it's not going to be easy to solve. But we always seem to get over these humps and I'm sure we will this time too.

    Flying blind.

Kim' not here today and she's got the roster spread sheet so I'm going from memory. Seems to me that we were thinking we would do something like this.
ESPN has us at $970,000 under ??? (I think its actually more)
    cut Mangum $650000
    Sauerbrun restructure 200,000
    Williams restructure 1,200,000
cut Vinson 375,000 (Wesley has stepped up from what we hear)
    Cut Kyle 477,000
    Cut Montgomery 375,000
Clears us $4,247,000 to sign rookies
and leaves us players like Tuten, Richardson etc..that we could cut later if we need to sign say Eric Davis.

Not enough hig dollar guys to restructure - basically Moose is it.

I got my numbers at www.nflpa.org

I think it's fine to cut all the guys mentioned - you can only have so many guys on the roster. Cut the 'excess' guys, all of whom are Seifert era.

I mentioned Wesley stepping up, and here's an article on it.

Man, there's more than just one out there.

Also Menzer pumped up Anthony Bright, and Hurney's big on Tolhurst.

It would be a cap thing. I THINK that Montgomery would be included in the cap number, and Goings and Brown WOULD NOT be included in it, b/c they are so cheap. It would be a clean $450k saved.

Plus, we don't really need him. We'll have:

    Smith
    Foster
    Goings/Brown
    Bates

I'm not saying Montgomery wouldn't be a better rb than Brown or Goings *not saying he would be either*, I'm just talking about the ever present salary cap.
