    Not sure. It's a Catholic practice. I think a local diocese has to petition the Vatican, who, in turn investigate the candidate to see if he or she is worthy. They make the final determination as to whether or not the candidate is to be canonized as a saint. I think that's the way it works.

    Isn't it the position of many, or most, non-Catholic Christians that the term "saint" refers to all believers, & not just a special few who were exemplary in some way?

    Probably a term used to describe believers in some circles, but according to Catholic doctrine, a Saint has to be canonized by the church. They are somewhet elevated amongst believers, which is why I call bullshit....but that's just me. I think Catholic doctrine has been too much shaped by politics, historically, and not course corrected toward Jesus' teachings.
