When a person accepts Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior, all of his sins are forgiven -- past, present, and future. Yes, suicide is a sin, but it was forgiven when that person gave His life to Christ in exchange for His grace.

According to the Bible. I don't really know what the SBC's official position is on suicide. And not to put too fine of a point on it, I don't really care.

HB, please correct me if I am wrong, but each major group of religions have different beliefs as to the answer of JB's question.

If you were a strong Catholic- you would give a totally different answer and probably be able to back your stance up with scripture. The same for Jewish, Muslim etc...

You were speaking solely from your religious convictions.

Am I off base with that assumption?

Yeah I think this is the most important post in here that nobody seems to see.

jb - if you are contemplating this, you need to get some help. I have a therapist who can refer you to people - even in different states and also get possible financial help for therapy if you need it.

    Suicide is not the answer.

He had a friend commit suicide, I think JB is too smart for that and he's growing every day spiritually and emotionally. The thread titled 'On this other message board where I post', tells the story.

I haven't researched other major belief systems' position on suicide very much. I think just about all of them discourage it, generally speaking, but you're right that each has it's own interpretations and doctrines regarding the spiritual consequences of it. And yes, it would follow that different scriptures would include different philosophies about suicide. Jews, Muslims, Catholics, and Protestants all use differing scriptures, so I'm pretty sure their positions vary to one degree or another.

Yes, I was speaking from the perspective of the Protestant Bible, because that's what JB believes and is pursuing.

My comment about the Southern Baptist Convention was probably a little out of character for me, but I've watched the SBC for a while, read their website and their statement of faith. I've noticed their politics and bureacracy, and more to the point, their hypocrisy, and it's left a sour taste in my mouth.

I don't consider myself a Baptist, even though my church is affiliated with the SBC. To give you an insight into how we view that association, however, it was two full years after I started attending regularly before I knew about that affiliation. The Bible teaches unity, not denomination. I recently learned that according to NewsWeek, there are over 38,000 Christian denominations throughout the world. I was both shocked and saddened by that fact. So much for the "body" of Christ. :(
