    Just saw it tonight. Really liked it. I was skeptical about Mos Def being Chuck Berry, but he did a decent job. Anyone else seen it?

    No and probably won't. Mos Def is pretty good at acting though. He usually surprises me.

    WW: in my opinion it was well worth it (I buy not rent). As a music historian I find it to be onpoint and accurate in many aspects. Though seeming to really up Etta James, and not many of the other artists that went through Chess Records. Harvey Fuqua had a duet with Etta, and if my memory is correct Marvin Gay was on drums. That record was before their Detroit exodus. Though in retrospect, I'd say that Harvey was getting too close to Etta at a time when Leonard wanted her to himself. Leonard sent Harvey to Detroit to check out/help out their other label 'Checkmate' with Marvin in tow [​IMG]

    Wound up meeting Gwen Gordy of ANNA records (yes, Berry's sister) who was a songwriter. Anna Gordy was 'running' things with 'then boyfriend' Roquel Davis. Check-Mate was ANNA's distributor before TAMLA label started. Harvey married Gwen, Marvin married Anna. hmmmm

    Briefly outlined in The Complete Motown Software" which I wrote. But none of the Detroit link, disdain, or competition of the CHESS markets mentioned. Nor was Atlantic records competition knocking on Chess' door.

    *Marvin Gay, Jr changed his name to Gaye to distance himself somewhat from his 'bible totting' minister father that didn't like R&B the least bit.
    ** Lamont Anthony is a pseudonym for Lamont Dozier of Holland Dozier Holland.
    ***The Voice Masters consists of:
    Ty Hunter - later one of 'The Originals', had 2 singles on ANNA
    David Ruffin - later one of the Temptations
    Lamont Dozier - Of HDH fame
    CP Spencer (Crathman Plato Spencer) - One of The Spinners
    and Freddie Gorman
    Walter Gaines- one of 'The Originals'- who also pitched in on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" LP
    **** producer Billy Davis is Roquel Billy Davis - his 'raised hands conductor signature' logo is on every ANNA Records label.
