    ANOTHER WILLIAMS TRADED TO MIAMI

A few months ago, tailback Ricky Williams made the move from New Orleans to Miami. Now, another Williams from the newly-constituted NFC South has landed in South Florida.

A league source tells us that the Miami Dolphins have acquired defensive end Jay Williams from the cap-strapped Carolina Panthers.

Carolina will receive at least a mid-round pick for the veteran defensive end, who joined the Panthers as a free agent in 2000 after spending six seasons with the Rams.

Williams' agent, Ron Del Duca, declined comment on the issue. (And for any of you who know the typically loquacious Mr. Del Duca, a contributor to this here site, his silence on this one speaks volumes.)

The Panthers automatically will erase from the books $1.65 million in salary, giving them enough money to sign their remaining rookie draft picks, including second overall selection Julius Peppers.

Addition by subtraction, great move front office - $1.65 Cap clearance and a pick.

    I'm thrilled.

    Especially if it's a 3rd or 4th rounder.

I wonder what lucky DE gets a roster spot now.

The fact that we actually got a mid-round pick for him is good enough for me. Now hopefully we can get Peppers and Foster signed.

    I would expect a 5th. No more, and no less. A 6th isn't worthwhile value - a 4th is bordering on starter/at least a situational starter.

This is such excellent news! I remember about a month ago when this was rumored on Warcat, right before Miami signed Burnett.
Panther fans were saying they would be happy with ANY pick to off load JW at that time.
Since a 4th or 5th is considered mid round it sounds like we will get at least a 5th.
If that pick from Miami is in fact conditional every sack and tackle Williams registers will get us closer to a higher pick next year. All us Panther fans will still be able to root for JW this year. He may end up doing us more good in a phins jersey than he ever could in one of ours.
I will attempt a beer buzzed back flip if we end up getting as high as a 3rd for ol’ Jay!
    :D

I take it we eat the remaining of his signing bonus correct?

They also released Daryl Gardener??? He had just signed a 7 year extension before 2000. 6'6, 310...the reasoning behind getting Chester was that they could move Gardner to end.

I wouldn't put him at end though. And I probably wouldn't pick him up.

    Wow.

Oh, the 4th...that's fucking wonderful. I've really wanted to have an extra 3rd or 4th in each of the lat two years' drafts. This could buy us some good stuff.
