8 teams. Use the existing bowls as the playoff games.

The hero gets a trip to NYC?

Boise State's star running back Ian Johnson and his fiance, Broncos cheerleader Chrissy Popadics, pose for photos in New York's Robert Wagner Park with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop, Wednesday Jan. 3, 2007. Moments after the sophomore running back raced to the end zone for the game-winning, 2-point conversion in Monday's Fiesta Bowl, Johnson popped the question to his girlfriend on the field in the frenzied aftermath of the Broncos' 43-42 overtime victory. 16 teams. The Big 10 - every team - played a 12 game schedule by Nov 18th this year. It was nuts to play 12 straight weeks, but they did it. So, even with a bye you could end the season at Thanksgiving and with two weeks off you'd still be done by the second weekend of Jan - which is when the season ends now anyway.

every team. scrap the regular season and seed all teams based on preseason polling and have one great big motherfucking playoff that begins the first weekend of September.

That's actually the only legitimate way to run a playoff, although I think you'd need to seed it in groups like the World Cup. Then you'd have a round-robin first stage where everyone plays everyone else in that group to determine who advances, rinse, repeat, etc.

Seriously, a college football playoff is beyond dumb for a multitude of reasons (would undermine the regular season, absolutely would not guarantee that the "best teams" even made it to the final game, still enormous controversy about who gets in, etc). Unfortunately most people are idiotic sheep who simply latch onto an idea and repeat it as if a self-evident truth without actually ever thinking about the consequences of the decision.

Anyway, this was a hell of a game (bets on whether or not that's the hottest chick in Idaho?). It will be remembered for ages as one of the best bowl games ever, which it wouldn't be if it was just a preliminary round game before Boise got destroyed by OSU or USC or someone.
