I'm buying my parents an HDTV for Christmas and probably will pick something up from BB/CC when I get into town Friday.

Question about Broadcast HD with an HD Tuner (QAM/ATSC)...

How does it look? Does it get a good signal? Do I need to get an HD antenna?
They live in Ballantyne and I hope signal reaches there. They currently have basic cable from Time Warner until we figure out which cable or satellite package to get them.

Thanks for the help in advance.

i loaned rabbit ears to someone at work who just moved here and hadn't had their cable hooked up yet, and they get HD... and it's just a really old pair of basic rabbit ears... they like it enough it's been 3 months and couldn't be happier and still don't have cable... FWIW

but go to HHGregg for the best deal IMHO... they have a 46" LCD 1080i Samsung for $1699 I got my eye on, I think it's the 4661

    It has all these tuners...

NTSC tuner: A built-in NTSC tuner allows you to view standard analog television broadcasts through your television without a separate cable box.

ATSC tuner: The ATSC tuner means that you can enjoy over-the-air digital channels and theater quality audio (with a separate HD antenna) without the need for a digital antenna.

QAM tuner: The QAM tuner gives this TV the capability to receive free in-the-clear digital programming.

    -------------------------------------------

but from the looks of it, I will still need an antenna to view HD Over the Air Broadcast unless I can plug in the cable into the QAM and get HD channels?

The ATSC tuner will allow you to receive the Digital TV stations using are regular antenna. I am in Mooresville and pick up all of the Charlotte stations with a set of rabbit ears...This is going to be the best quality available. The cable and sat operators may add compression to squeeze more channels into the available bandwidth which may compromise picture quality.

The QAM tuner will allow you connect your cable service and pickup the local Digital stations. I use DirecTV so I am not up to speed on what cable offers but they may not charge for that.

You would need a set top box to pick up premium HD channels.
