QB - Dan Marino. Shocker's right. You take Roger Craig away from Montana, Franco Harris away from Bradshaw, Dorsey Levens/Ahman Green away from Favre, and Terrell Davis away from John Elway, and Marino blows every one of them away in every category.

RB - Walter Payton. Walter had a lot more lean years than Emmitt did, and Walter never held out.

WR - Jerry Rice. Simply the best, in every category, by a good margin. And the funny thing is, he ain't done yet.

TE - ???. I really don't know enough about them to say with any kind of authority, but I will say this--when it's said and done, Tony Gonzales may make a strong case to be the best ever.

OL - Anthony Munoz. If Boselli could stay healthy, he'd be a strong candidate. There have been so many good ones, it's hard to say. But another who may lay claim to being the undisputed best by the time he retires is Leonard Davis. He is just awesome.

DT - Bryant Young. Again, there have been so many great ones. Joe Greene, Randy White, and others. By the time he retires, Warren Sapp may have overtaken BY.

DE - Reggie White. He's not my favorite by any stretch. My favorite football player ever is Howie Long, and he is a HOF'er. But I have to admit Reggie was better. Very possible that Jevon Kearse and Julius Peppers could be up there in another 12 years.

OLB - Lawrence Taylor. May be the most dominant linebacker ever. IMO, Junior Seau is a close second, though.

ILB - Mike Singletary. So many good ones to choose from. Butkus, Lambert are up there. But Singletary was smart and played hard, but clean. Butkus was a thug, and so was Lambert.

CB - Deion Sanders. I hate to put him here because the man never tackled. But I have to remind myself that the position isn't about tackling--it's about defending the pass. And Prime Time was the best corner cover ever.

S - Ronnie Lott. Lott had it all--intelligence, speed, toughness, aggression, strength, skill. I can't think of anyone else that comes close, except maybe Steve Atwater.

    QB - Montana
RB - Payton over Dickerson, Brown.
FB - Riggins - in reality, wasn't Jim Brown playing fullback though? Problem is, it always pisses me off when true fullbacks aren't put in the other position at RB on these lists. If Riggins isn't fullback enough for you, Bronco Nagurski is.
LT - Munoz over Dierdorf and Shell
    LG - Gene Upshaw
C - Mike Webster over Otto
    RG - Forrest Gregg
RT - Roosevelt Brown over McCormack
    TE - Winslow
I'm surprised you guys are having trouble with TEs. If not Winslow, IMO far and away the guy here, you've got Ozzie Newsome, Mike Ditka, John Mackey.
WR - Jerry Rice, no contest.
    WR -

    LDE - Reggie White
    DT - Alan Page
    DT - Joe Greene
Merlin Olsen deserves hellacious mention on this one but doesn't make it.
    DE - Deacon Jones
OLB - Lawrence Taylor - while I do feel that Taylor benefitted from the fact that no one had used a guy like that in the 3-4 before, he was still unmistakably one of the best football players to hit the field.
MLB - Butkus. Hard to say, hard to choose, I'm giving him points for what his career would've been had he not gotten his knee screwed.
    OLB - Ted Hendricks
    CB - Herb Adderley
SS - Renfro - I'll be honest, he was never a SS. Blah, I'm tired of thinking and Renfro was too good a DB.
    FS - Lott
    CB - Mike Haynes

    Coach - Lombardi
    GM - George Young, NYG

    a few things...

barry sanders the best back? laughable. i'd take a half-dozen over him ANY day.

i want a guy that gets into the endzone and gets the thre yards when i need them. can't count on barry to do anything but put fannies in the seat for his dance routines and "home run capability."

marino is not the best qb ever. he passed for all those yards because his teams couldn't get a running game going -- or did he just never LET his team get a running game going...cocky mofo. moreso than kelly.

how come nobody thinks that shannon sharpe is the best tight end ever? the dude just had a TWO HUNDRED YARD GAME and he's past his prime.

deion and darryl green would be the best set of corners anywhere, anytime.

  6. Bingo LarryD. Hasbeens, you can't play "what if" to determine the best QB. Take away Thurmas Thomas and Reed from Kelly - and you would have to take away MUCH more from Bradshaw than just Franco. Earl Campbell, if he'd played with the Steelers (hence better QB) could have been even better than he was. with Houston I would have taken him over Franco.

Do you want to take away the "Marks" (Clayton & Duper) from Marino, to make it fair? Montana was amazing - I just prefer TerryB.

A couple of tight ends I didn't see mentioned - Dave Casper, Mark Bavarro. I still enjoy listening to Bob Trumpy whine about how Pittsburgh used to beat the shite out of him...

PR, my point was that Marino never had the running game to take the heat off the pass that the other greats did. And yet, Marino's name is on almost every passing record there is to have. The only place Marino was lacking is overall wins and especially Super Bowl wins. The reason why the Dolphins didn't have the wins that Montana's 49ers, Bradshaw's Steelers, Kelly's Bills, Favre's Packers, and Elway's Broncos had was a lack of a balanced attack. Bob Griese's Phins went undefeated because they had a defense and Larry Czonka. If Marino had Ricky Williams behind him, he'd have won at least 3 Super Bowls.

We all have different standards for judging who the best was, and that's what makes it interesting. My own standards fall more to passing stats than wins when determining how good a QB was.

Not that leadership and intangibles aren't crucially important to the position. Men like Kelly, Montana, and Unitas were probably the best field generals the game has ever seen.

But I try to put the great ones on a level 'playing field', and figure out who's the better player. Granted, that's difficult and may be more than a little subjective, because the fact remains they didn't play on a level field. Marino had two HOF WR's to help him. Montana had Rice, Taylor, Jones and Craig. Kelly had Reed, Thomas, and Lofton. Elway had T.D., Shannon Sharpe, and others. (sorry Bronco fans, I'm drawing a blank) Favre had Freeman, Brooks, Levens and Chmura. Now he's got Franks, Driver, and Green. Bradshaw had Franco, Stallworth, and Swann. Aikman had Emmitt, Irvin, and Novacheck.

As the best pure passer, my money's still on Marino and that is my top qualifier for rating QB's. But of course, that's just my opinion.

I have always loved Favre. How many years does he have left in him?

As far as injuries, the guy seems almost indestructible.
