I recently asked a guy I know who is a Carolina fan what he thought about the football scandal investigation. He said he didn't know much about it, he doesn't really keep up with Carolina football. True story.

Wonder if this "fan" felt the same in 1997?

Through most of the 70's, early 80's, and early 90's. Are you really so blinded by hatred that you don't know that UNC has generally had a very good football program, albeit intersperesed with periods of absolute shit.

We are just paying for the bad karma of running Bill Dooley out of town for no good reason.

    From ESPN Insider:

UNC received a notice of allegations from the NCAA, and it detailed nine potentially major violations by the football program, including unethical conduct by a former assistant coach as well as failure to adequately monitor the conduct of former and current players.

The notice, released Tuesday evening, accuses former associate head coach John Blake of providing "false and misleading information" to both NCAA investigators and the school regarding his relationship with late NFL agent Gary Wichard. That included a failure to report $31,500 in outside income from Wichard's firm, Pro Tect Management LLC, from May 2007 to October 2009.

The NCAA said Blake worked to steer players to Wichard once they reached the NFL. Blake's attorneys have previously characterized the transactions as loans between friends during tough financial times.

The notice states seven players received more than $27,000 in improper benefits in 2009 and 2010. In addition, the NCAA alleged unethical conduct by former tutor Jennifer Wiley for refusing to cooperate with the investigation and providing about $3,500 worth of extra benefits in travel, parking expenses and free tutoring to players.

This is some hefty stuff, especially the parts relating to Blake, the academic scandal and the allegation that multiple players were receiving five figures in extra benefits from agents, former players and others. At this point, though, UNC has avoided the dreaded "lack of institutional control" charge and seemed to do so because so much of this has been cast onto Blake and rogue tutor Jennifer Wiley. The NCAA apparently didn't feel as if it had enough evidence to draw any line between Blake and head coach Butch Davis. While having an associate head coach serving as a runner for an agent sure sounds like a prime example of lack of institutional control, the NCAA seems to have bought that as soon as UNC learned of Blake's issues, the school moved to get rid of him.

That said, if you are looking for parallels with NCAA justice as it relates to other programs, don't bother. It's apples and, um, rotten eggs. As I've said many times, the NCAA seems as if it is just making it up as it goes along.

Not blinded by hatred at all. I grew up a Tar Heel fan and even attended just about every home football game in 1997, even the big ass game against FSU I think when both teams were rated in the top 5 maybe? It's not that the Heels haven't had a decent team at times, it's that they went to far to try and reach that next level.

I was at that game too. We got our asses totally kicked. Couldn't move the ball at all on offense. Our defense did play pretty well though if I recall correctly.

I was dating a girl at UNC at the time and we went to the game. Only game UNC lost that season, I think. Even as good as UNC was that year, they still looked like a JV team versus a varsity team(FSU) when players from the two schools lined up against each other. 62,000 in attendance that day. The place was packed and it was a great atmosphere.
