BREAKING NEWS: New hornets ownership group comes forward

Discussion in 'SportsTalk' started by LarryD, Mar 5, 2002.

  1. What that would tell other cities/fans is that if you don't like the ownership, quit supporting the team and you'll be rewarded with new ownership. I'm all for people not supporting something they don't like, but to think IT should change to suit YOUR needs is a little over the top.

The owners have things they way they want them. Today, there are cities willing to give them arenas to move their franchise -- while they might not move, at least the cities are competing for the franchises. If they bar Shinn from moving, people will get the idea that they are in control -- that they can boycott the current owners to get new ones. So instead of cities competing for NBA franchises, you'd have people not showing up to games out of protest with the idea that maybe the owners will be punished for whatever transgression may have occured. The result would be the franchises would have to cater more to the cities rather than the other way around. Not the end result they're looking for.

There are precidents for a league making an owner sell. As stated above the SF Giants and also Leonard Tose was forced by the NFL to sell the Eagles. As far as a franchise being stripped, you'd have to check the league bylaws on that one, if it's there, Shinnridge may in fact be checkmated if the league doesn't allow the move.

Someone asked a good question over at Charlotte.com (go figure... I'll admit I myself was shocked)... anyways the question was is Johnson the guy Schwab was talking about or was it someone else??? I mean is there still another ownership group waiting in the wings???

no, this is the "other group" we've been waiting to hear from.

  8. There's nothing wrong with owners being held accountable for their actions. He is accountable. He's been losing money cuz people don't want his product anymore because of his actions. He's gotten the idea, already. People don't want him in Charlotte. No sweat, he's on the next bus out of town. That's the way it works.

I look at it this way -- He's trying to sell a product and the folks around here aren't buying (even if it is his fault). So now he's looking to sell it somewhere else. That's capitalism. If there's enough demand, maybe somebody else will come in and sell to the good folks of Charlotte.

SDS...Read Sly's reply. The owners HATE Shinn. They do NOT want New Orleans in the NBA. They do NOT want to lose Charlotte.

They can NOT force Shinnridge to sell.

They CAN say that Charlotte is too good of a market. You can't move.

Shinnridge would then sell. He has no $$$

but their schtick won't work in new orleans, either, i wouldn't think. they've taken all the fun out of the nba.

that's the direction that i was coming from -- that if other owners do what they do, their fans would turn on them, too.
