Another good reason why they need to start football and get to I-A as soon as possible!!!!!!! An eventual move to the BIG EAST would increase that total a whole lot!!!!!!!!

Bump . . . Article from Tommy Tomlinson (Observer Columnist). Hmmmmmmmmmmm, does anybody sense that lately, it seems like the Observer seems to be acting more anti-UNCC Football than before  ? ? ?

    ==============

    IN MY OPINION

Football fans hard to find for UNCC
    TOMMY TOMLINSON

On Friday I drove from uptown out to UNC Charlotte. It's about nine miles. It only seems like a million.

Walk around the campus and it feels like any other good-sized university -- students hauling around backpacks, playing tennis, chilling in the courtyards.

But 95 percent of Charlotte never sees any of it. The only ones who do are students, employees and commuters on University City Boulevard.

This has a lot to do with why UNCC is in deep thought about whether to start a football team. UNCC is a fine university with a strong faculty and more than 20,000 students. But it can't get the rest of Charlotte to pay attention.

That's because of two historical trends that define modern Charlotte:

    1. We lust after cheap land.

    2. Most people here come from somewhere else.

The origins of UNCC go back to a night school started in 1946 on the campus of Central High -- where Central Piedmont Community College is now.

Can you imagine what UNCC would be like if it were in that spot today? You'd have 20,000 college students on the edge of uptown, a lot of them living there. You'd have a campus ringed by bookstores and coffee shops and bars. You'd have a basketball arena uptown that had people actually coming to the games.

But UNCC leaders thought they needed a lot of land, and in 1961 -- when the first students moved to the current campus -- land that far from the center city was a bargain.

Over the years, University City has grown up around the campus. But the campus doesn't feel like part of the neighborhood. It's bounded by highways. You can't just walk over there and visit.

None of that would matter as much if UNCC had a core of local fans guaranteed to fill the seats at football games and kick in a little extra to the athletic department.

UNCC has some of those kind and generous folks, but not enough. So many Charlotteans come from places like Cleveland or Rochester or Houston. They're fans of Ohio State or Syracuse or Texas A&M. They might come to a UNCC game for fun. But their hearts are back home.

The committee that recommended UNCC football has all kinds of optimism. The committee estimated that UNCC would make $1.5 million a year in game guarantees -- basically, getting paid to take a beating from bigger schools. But only five teams in the country make that much.

And even if the school does make that much, students would still have to pay an extra $300 a year in athletic fees.

Look. You are never going to get me to come out against college football. It's my favorite sport. UNCC football would bring students together, give alumni something to rally around, and after a practice or two they could probably beat Duke.

But adding football is not like laying new carpet. It's like putting a whole new wing on the house.

And UNCC leaders -- for reasons they can't do much about -- have no way if knowing if they can ever fill the room.

    :jumprope:

This football thing is starting to make the powers that be or used to be a bit nervous. This is evident by the those two dolts said last week. This latest piece doesn't sound too bad, just pointing out one guys opinion. As this quest becomes more and more real critics will appear more frequently. The paper knows this will create interest and get people to read so I expect more of these types of pieces. Plus, isn't the paper full of Chapel Hill grads anyway?

49er football will eventually weaken UNC-CH football (not that its strong)

therefore most of the Observer columnists (UNC-CH grads) don't like the idea out of pure snotty attitudes
