Just saw on yahoo where Maddux, Lopez, and Sheffield were expected to go elsewhere next season. Other free-agents included Franco and Castilla. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Smoltz decides to retire. With this being said, are they finally going to try to rebuild through youth or will they go after older free-agents to keep there divisonal streak going?

How strong is that speculation on Smoltz? Was his injury this year that bad?

I have heard pretty much the same thing, with the exception being that Smoltz is staying and will have his final surgery to go out there and pitch as long as he can and if another injury happens he is retiring. Also from the list Shef was the only one they has a slim chance to keep/re-sign.

Sweet, maybe the Red Sox can get Smoltz.

No, wait, you actually have to remove the starting pitcher to bring a reliever in.

I was thinking the same thing, Vp. I think Epstein likes paying a bunch of set up guys what he could pay one closer.

Who on the Sox are free agents? Most of those guys had career years, so they might strike while their stock is high.

I don't think that anybody really had a career year. Wlaker and Mueller had good ones, and Trot and Ortiz certainly had what I hope will be their breakout years, but Millar, Nomar, Manny, Damon, even Varitek pretty much produced what you would expect.

The best thing is that I think we can now definitely say that Lowe's year last year was not a fluke and they need to pony up and pay the man.

Lowe can pitch forever. Sink 2 seam fastball pitchers don't need power. He can go until he is 40.
