The Braves have decided that Mark Kotsay will be their center fielder in 2008. I hate to see them give up Joey Devine because I still think he will be a good pitcher in the majors but they had nobody ready to take over in center. Kotsay is a one year plug-in IMO. He is a free agent after the season and Oakland is having a fire sale. He will hit for more average than Andruw Jones and will come close to playing as good in the field. The big drop off will be in power, he will hit 20 homers at best. The knock on Kotsay is his health coming off a bad back in 2007. I will bet that he won't look as stooopid as AJ when thrown a curve ball.

    1-Escobar
    2-Kotsay
    3-Jones
    4-Texiera
    5-Francour
    6-McCann
7-Diaz (or whoever else plays left)
    8-Johnson

    Not a bad lineup.

Yeah, it looks like Kotsay is just holding the spot for Schaffer I believe.

That's the way the team is leaning. Braves got a break business wise when the A's agreed to pay a big chunk of Kotsay's salary this year.

Other than Penny and Martin a fairly unimpressive lineup

huh? others I can see that, but Penny was our most reliable and Martin started on the All Star team and was one of the best all around catchers in the National League. Set a record for stolen bases as a Dodger catcher, and there's been alot of great Dodger catchers.

If you guys think Kotsay is anywhere close to Andruw Jones defensively, you are dreaming. The only good things about bringing Kotsay in, is that he is a good guy, cheap, and so mediocre that Jordan Schaffer will feel no pressure at all replacing him.

Nah, that's a very promising lineup. The question is how many of those young guys will live up to their potential, but that's a ton of talent.

    smash:
Switch Kelly Johnson with Kotsay. His solid OBP days are over, while Johnson is much better at getting on base.

    WO:
No way that Kotsay comes anywhere close to 20 homers. Good grief. He's only hit more than 15 once in his career, and he's more brittle now. Best case scenario is more like 15, and most likely is ~10.

agree. what are your thoughts with Torres history with so much young talent? You think he can develop them quickly so the Dodgers can win the west this year? I still don't know, I'm hoping...

The Kotsay trade smells alot like the Brett Boone for Quilvio Veras trade in 99, when the Braves snagged another good-guy -in-the-clubhouse, but unproductive-on-the-field-type-player,Wally Joyner.
The Braves should re-stock from their farm system cuz their track record in trades is not too hot.
