it's unlikely the draft pick will make it to chicago before 2016 when it loses protection. so there's still time to suck and get picks. that's what this team was constructed to do, so they might as well do it now.

i don't think you can tie up your cap space on guys that have potential to be better than average -- not when you're looking down the road at 2 or 3 years with possibly multiple lotto picks.

charlotte gets portland's #1 pick as soon as it drops out of the top 12 or in 2016 when protection ends. so hopefully the blazers continue to suck.

charlotte also just grabbed detroit's first which is heavily protected thru 2014, so i'm guessing we get it 2015.

seems like they should just carry on and hope they score in the lotto. that's what this putrid season was all about, wasn't it?

    More from insider:
    • We know the real intrigue of the draft begins at No. 2 with the Charlotte Bobcats. Their trade of Corey Maggette for Ben Gordon and a 2013 first-rounder from Detroit makes things a little easier if they keep the pick.

I think you can safely scratch Bradley Beal off the Bobcats' board. (His entire adviser team breathes a huge sigh of relief.) Ditto for Harrison Barnes (another huge exhale). For Bobcat fans

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is very much in the mix, but if the Bobcats keep the pick, it still sounds like Thomas Robinson has a slight edge.

    • The Bobcats continue to talk to teams about moving down in the draft. The Wizards continue to hope that they don't make such a move.

Why? As we just noted, the Bobcats are likely to select Robinson at No. 2, which means the Wizards' favorite player, Beal, would slide to No. 3.

Here's what has Washington worried. The most obvious trade partner for the Bobcats remains the Cavs, who could send them No. 4 and possibly No. 24 in return for No. 2. The Cavs would move to get their hands on Beal. The Bobcats then would select Robinson at No. 4, the same player they are likely to take with the No. 2 pick. The Wizards then would have to choose between Barnes and Kidd-Gilchrist.

So it shouldn't come as any surprise that late Tuesday evening, word began to "leak" out of Washington that the Wizards were getting "calls" from a number of teams that are trying to move up to No. 3 to take (drumroll, please) ... Robinson.

It's a nice shot across the Bobcats' bow by the Wizards. In essence, Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld is telling Bobcats GM Rich Cho: If you make a deal with the Cavs, don't expect your favorite player, Robinson, to be there at No. 4.

You have to love these games as we get closer and closer to draft night. It reeks of a bluff, but then again, there are a number of teams that like Robinson and the Wizards probably feel like they could nab Barnes a little later in the draft if he's going to be the consolation prize.

A trade with the Cavs makes the most sense if they could get the 4 and 24. Even if Washington were to take Robinson and I doubt they would, Kidd-Gilcrest would still be a nice addition. Then at 24 taking someone like Draymon Green of Michigan State or Fab Melo from the 'Cuse.

On a side note I wouldn't mind Kris Humphries from the Nets. Unrestricted free agent who had a decent year 13 ppg and 11 rpg. Maybe a change in venue (smaller market not as much of a media circus) is what he needs. Depending on what kind of $$ he's looking for. He made 8 mil last year

If they're not interested in Beal then trading down is obvious.

This has to be the most interesting draft they have ever had.

Kind of shocking that a team this bad for this long hasn't had a top seven pick since 2006.

    Hindsight draft:
2004 - still Emeka Okafor, as that draft was a lot of poop after Howard.

2005 - not win the last game of the season so they could have picked Chris Paul at #4. Barring that, Bynum would have been nice but I don't think people discussed him as a top five pick. Felton was better than the next four guys taken after him.

2005 - I don't remember anyone liking the Sean May pick. Granger was obvious.

2006 - Rudy Gay would have been better than Morrison, obviously, but hardly a franchise-changer.

2007 - Jason Richardson was a pretty good player and that draft was a lot of poop, so drafting and trading Wright was fine. Noah would have been ok, but nothing special.

2007 - Dudley is a decent player. God damn that trade for Boris Diaw, especially since it got rid of Richardson too. What the hell?

2008 - Brook Lopez or Roy Hibbert would have been better, but again, it's not like they really missed out on any gems by taking Augustin.

2008 - Serge Ibaka went four picks after Alexis Ajinca, and there were a handful of other still productive players who went in that group of picks as well. Bad miss here.

2009 - No one better than Gerald Henderson in the immediate vicinity either.

2010 - Can't remember why they didn't have a first or second round pick.

2011 - Still hope Bismack can develop into a defensive presence and I do like his energy, but Brandon Knight would have been a decent starting PG.

2011 - Kawhi Leonard would have been a much better pick than Kemba.

So all in all there haven't been a ton of draft mistakes, they just haven't had enough high picks and especially not in drafts that had good talent.

this is kinda why i'm not a big fan of tanking to get lotto picks. it's a crap shoot to get a high pick and it's a crap shoot to turn that high pick into something good. if it works, it works great, but if it fails you're left with a crappy team still. heck, even if it work, you got a good player on a crappy team. you really have to hit 2 or 3 lotteries in a row to really build via lottery. again, not just getting lucky picking high, but turning that picking into some talent.

but that's where the bobcats find themselves, so we'll see how they look in 2015 when they're done...
