    salary picture for charlotte:

they got cap space aplenty. they could ditch tyrus thomas and save $8 mill if they wanted to go after somebody, but my guess is that they're more afraid of not spending enough and getting stuck having to overspend on people just to make the salary floor.

the only way they land a big time free agent is to illustrate that the bobcats are a legit franchise without that player. they gotta start winning first or you're just gonna get the b-listers who come to charlotte as a means to collect the biggest check possible.

Agreed but signing the B-list guys now does not help us get to the point that elite free agents consider us. Best chance we have is to let the young guys play and hope one or two of them emerges.

[IMG] Just because it says their current teams would like to keep them doesn't mean they will. Ersan Ilyasova is a guy the Bobcats could sign if they wanted to (and one I like). Ditto for Nicolas Batum (worth considering), Ryan Anderson (pass), O.J. Mayo (not sure), Lou Williams (like him), JaVale McGee (hell no), Jeremy Lin (no), Goran Dragic (would love that), Jeff Green (meh), and Omer Asik (maybe). All those guys are 25 or younger.

None of those guys are going to be stars who you can build around. If we had a decent core in place then some of those guys would make sense but until we build that core we might as well keep losing and getting high draft picks.

I think you've forgotten that a future first goes to Chicago for Tyrus Thomas. Also, it's a terrible idea to just pass on all young free agents to tank for draft picks. If a guy is 24 and you believe he can be one of the 10 best at his position, then go for it. That potential is there for some of those players.

there are like a dozen teams interested in ilyasova, so i dunno that the bobcats could sign him if they wanted to. the ball's in his court and it's going to take a lot of money to get him to sign. i think where the bobcats are at, it's better to try to find the next ilyasova or lin or anderson or dragic or asik or any number of "under the radar" guys that turned out to be ballers.

i agree. i would also look to people who've had success overseas or in the d-league and maybe find somebody whose game blossoms. avoid length contracts and embrace the suckage. i don't like the technique, but it would be foolish to get scared now and abort the implosion.
