    Bobcats’ Chandler traded to Mavs
    By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

Email Print The Charlotte Bobcats have traded center Tyson Chandler(notes) and Alex Ajinca to the Dallas Mavericks for Erick Dampier(notes), Matt Carroll(notes) and Eduardo Najera(notes), a league source tells Yahoo! Sports.

A proposed trade between the Bobcats and Toronto Raptors is officially dead. The Bobcats had earlier agreed to trade Chandler and forward Boris Diaw(notes) to the Raptors for guard Jose Calderon(notes) and forward Reggie Evans(notes).

Chandler told Y! Sports on Monday he had been told he was being traded. Sources said Bobcats owner Michael Jordan had been hesitant to trade Chandler, who averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds last season.

The Charlotte Bobcats, after backing out of a trade with Toronto, have agreed to deal Tyson Chandler to the Dallas Mavericks.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Bobcats and Mavericks reached terms on a deal that would send Chandler and Alexis Ajinca to Dallas for Erick Dampier, Eduardo Najera and Matt Carroll.

The Mavericks, sources said, parted with Dampier's $13 million non-guaranteed contract -- which Dallas has considered one of its most valuable trade chips -- because Charlotte was willing to re-acquire Carroll, who is due to earn $11.7 million over the next three seasons.

Dallas will now try to complete the signing of free-agent forward Al Harrington. The Mavericks, sources said, have extended an offer to Harrington with their $5.8 million mid-level exception.

One source close to the situation said that the Bobcats will consider keeping Dampier for the short term, instead of waiving him immediately, in case another trade opportunity presents itself. Any team that has Dampier on its books can release him and instantly wipe $13 million off next season's payroll.

Sources said that Dallas, having determined that it would not be able to acquire any of its ambitious targets with the Dampier chip this summer, decided to make this trade to create as much financial flexibility as possible to keep pursuing a major trade score such as New Orleans' Chris Paul, whom the Mavericks have unsuccessfully chased for months.

Chandler actually fills two needs for Dallas, since he'll join Brendan Haywood in the Mavericks' center rotation and given that he will be playing on an expiring contract next season.

The Bobcats had agreed Monday to trade Chandler and Boris Diaw to Toronto for Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans as part of the Raptors' deal with Phoenix that will send Hedo Turkoglu to the Suns. But Charlotte, sources said, withdrew from the deal Monday night, partly because of a 10-percent trade bonus in Calderon's contract (which has nearly $30 million remaining over the next three seasons) and because coach Larry Brown was not in favor of the deal.

After losing out to Utah in the trade chase for Al Jefferson, Dallas immediately began pursuing Chandler.

Wonder how they'll handle Boris Diaw now? I like getting Matt Carroll back, he was pretty good for us off the bench.

I liked getting Carroll back until I saw he's getting over $11 million this year. Ouch, Collin has never been more right.

There is still speculation (hope?) that our deals aren't done. This one doesn't make much sense to me, but Dampier is supposed to be a nice trade chip for his non-guaranteed salary. If we cut him, does that mean we get a Trade Exception for that? I'm not sure how cutting helps us except for cutting salary, however if we were just cutting salary why would we take Najara and Carroll back?

We ended up adding salary if the deal stays like it is, and we still need a PG.

Poking around the internet apparently Dampier's contract is one of the most desireable trading chips out there now. It would be awesome if we could turn it into a point guard.
