10:54 am | Bobcats trade for Charlottean McInnis
    RICK BONNELL
    Staff Writer
Charlotte Bobcats have agreed to a trade that brings Charlottean Jeff McInnis home.

In return, Bernard Robinson will go to the New Jersey Nets, an NBA source confirmed this morning.

The trade addresses the Bobcats' need for a backup point guard, with Brevin Knight out at least the next month with a torn abdominal muscle.

The trade will add to the Bobcats' payroll this season. McInnis makes $3.6 million this year, while Robinson makes $1 million. A source familiar with the deal said the Nets will pay the Bobcats some cash to partially compensate for the difference in salaries.

The Bobcats get some cap relief next season because Robinson is owed about $1.1 million and McInnis's contract expires at the end of this season.

The Nets' incentive for making the trade is to avoid the NBA's luxury tax, imposed on teams above the salary cap, this season.

It was clear Monday that Bobcats coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff did not see much future for Robinson here. When asked if Robinson would pick up minutes while forward Gerald Wallace is injured, Bickerstaff made a negative remark about Robinson's ball-handling.

McInnis, who played at West Charlotte and North Carolina, has a high-maintenance reputation and was told not to report to the Nets training camp this season despite his guaranteed contract. He also had conflicts with coach Paul Silas when the two were with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

However, Bickerstaff has a long history with McInnis. Bickerstaff drafted McInnis as an executive with the Denver Nuggets and later chose to coach him with the Washington Wizards.

Assuming both players pass their physicals, completing the trade, McInnis could be in uniform in Orlando Friday for the Bobcats' game with the Magic.

I considered the possibility he was bullshitting me. Then I remembered he was a State fan... you forget that's the real kind of lame ass rumor State fans would come up with. (ref. http://www.packpride.com)
