Ok throw out your best opinions. You are in the championship game, your quarterback's confidence is shot so the runningback has to pull the team through. What Runningback, healthy at game time would you want to strap on the helmet and carry your team to victory.

Is there any doubt? He did everything better than everybody. Run/catch/block... hell, he was the 3rd string QB. Throw in the gentleman attitude and the lead-by-example mentality, I can't imagine there will ever be another Wally. I mean damn, even Jim McMahon liked him.

can't not put Thorpe in here. He was the complete back long before there was such a thing...while he may not have necessarily had the ultimate athleticism of a Sanders he had a lot of tools that never got used and got out of the game long before hs impact could be fully realized.

Otherwise I'd vote Payton, none better. Then Brown.

I'd say Thorpe was a better player, I mean he played both ways and special teams. He had what, 4 gold medals, and played 3 sports professionally. But as far as just what it takes to be an RB, I think Payton's got him.

    Can't Argue

Only reason i voted Brown was the fact that he did so much in such a little time. On the field it'd hard to argue what Payton did and with so little support. Off the field there is no comparison Brown isn't in Paytons league. Anyone heard if Brown has started eating again in prison?

You should just have a poll for who's 2nd best and fill Walters spot with somebody else.

    Payton

    Brown
    Sanders
    O.J. Simpson
    Earl Campbell
    Faulk
    Sayers
    Tony Dorsett
    John Riggins
    Eric Dickerson
    Larry Zsonka
    Mercury Morris
10 more backs in the league right now
    Emmitt Smith

Payton, hands down! Then "The Kansas Comet", had his career not been so short, what could have been? Then Brown.

I know it's not the topic, but here's my dream skill positions

    QB: Montana
    RB: Payton
FB: Put Jim Brown up there, he was a bruiser anyway
TE: Mike Ditka, maybe Shannon Sharpe, but only with a mussel
    WR: Rice, Carter, Largent

Can you tell I grew up watching football in the 80's?

QB - Montana (absolute no brainer IMO
RB - Tandom Payton and Brown
    TE - Tony Gonzalez
WR - Rice, Art Monk, Lynn Swan

No WAY Tony Gonzalez is NEAR that level YET... in time he may prove to be the best TE ever but he's got a LOT left to do before that time.
