Newton. And, no, I'm not stupid enough to have visions of him running all over the field and rushing for 1000 yards.

I'm probably in the minority (wait, I definitely am), but I buy into Gil Brandt's reporting on Newton. He feels strongly that Newton is an extremely hard worker (has always shown it), had a great sense of leadership and the weaknesses he does bring to the table are things that good coaching can turn around.

Mallett, other than sounding like a crackhead and (allegedly) engaging in drug use, has a cannon, and probably is the best pure passer. Parcells recently commented that Mallett's 40 time was "much higher" that Bledsoe's back in '90-whenever. He said he would be concerned about this, with the advent of the 3-4 schemes and the amount of blitzing he will see. Doesn't trust his instincts to improvise, and envisions a ton of sacks, and subsequent field position issues.

Gabbert's stock seems to be slipping, but much of that is media and team-driven conjecture. Good athlete, decent arm, good character.

Again--I won't cry if we take Dareus. I also won't cry if we take Newton. Regardless of who I want, it's pretty clear that Newton's their leader in the clubhouse.

 

Bledsoe if I had to pick, Cutler has some mobility.

 

For the record, I would be very pleased with a Bulger signing. Simple, cost-effective, and he has a full season of rest under his belt to offset some of the past injury issues.

Not a huge fan of wheeling any rookie QB out there on opening day. Also not really feeling the idea of rolling Clausen out there, day one, considering he has no opportunity to learn an entirely new offense during this ridiculous labor situation.

With Bulger, a quick study of this system and a player who has played in this system, you can hit the ground running with experience. Then, if it's Newton (2), and Clausen (3) (as I would imagine it would be), you have the luxury of allowing both to mature a bit.

There is not a good history of quarterbacks coming into the league needing to improve accuracy and decision-making, then actually doing so, regardless of their work ethic or lack thereof. It's much easier to address physical issues like arm strength or footwork, or small things like technique on play-action fakes and looking off safeties before throwing.

 

You're probably right about all of that. We'll see how he pans out.

 

Vick never completed more than 56% of his passes until 2010, when he got into a system that makes it almost impossible for him to not complete 60%+. He actually went apeshit, and completed 62%.

So, help me understand, since I'm not a scout or a coach: what leads to Newton's inability to throw more accurate passes? Is it mental with him? Mechanical: footwork, shoulders, grip? Help me, because, I was always taught that one of the most important elements to throwing a football with precision was good footwork/legwork, and a proper release. There's more, but it seems to me, with proper coaching (not Mike McCoy), you can take a QB with questionable accuracy, and refine his fundamentals to improve his game.

Or, perhaps, there's no hope, since he stole a laptop, cheated on tests, and his dad is a piece of shit.

I actually think McCoy has turned out to be a heck of a coach. I was hard on him back in the day, but he's been very solid.

 

I definitely could see Newton rushing for 1000. And if he does, he'll be a Pro Bowler. And I doubt he'll be half the passer that his fans will think he is.

This whole class is shit from an accuracy standpoint. Chances are, the best player from this group will be the one that gets on his accuracy. Plenty of arm, athleticism in this group, very little of the athleticism needed or that useful. I don't see extending the play as something in this offense that is of requirement. You get the ball out fast.
