yeah, i think cult status has to be unexpected. i don't think you can have a movie that receives lots of publicity, then doesn't do well in the box office, and then makes up for it in dvd/video rentals. that sounds more like bad marketing than a cult movie.

He wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Richard Weisz. It was a relatively low budget film and maybe he was embarrassed, but I thought it was great. Classic DeNiro film.

hmm... i don't think that's right. i had to look it up to remember who directed it (frankenheimer). the story and screenplay were by jd zeick who's got a few other films to his credit that don't sound at all like mamet flicks. plus, he's got a bio on imdb. imdb is pretty good about id'ing pseudonyms, too.

ronin is a good flick, and if it is a mamet screenplay, i'd still call it a frankenheimer movie (mainly for the car chases).

in looking into mamet, i noticed he wrote a movie called spartan. that's a pretty good one. and reminds me of another val kilmer movie i hadn't heard of called "the salton sea" which is really good.

    which reminds me...

memento. awseome fucking movie that i don't think did much at the box office.

edit: okay, my bad. imdb has him as a 2nd screenplay writer (you have to click more to see his name).

Ronins pretty cool, great car chase. And momentos pretty trippy, kinda HAVE to watch that one twice just to go, OH YEAH. Spartan was kinda lame tho, Wonderland was a much better Val Kilmer movie.

But its kinda hard to define "Cult" status. I mean Star Wars has the biggest cult following of any movie ever.

Ever seen 1 million years BC?

there's a documentary about the making of the boondock saints. very fascinating. i missed the first part of it, but it's almost more interesting than the movie itself. the writer/director is basically some nobody who thought he would show hollywood how it was done. he rubbed people the wrong way and ended up getting shafted by miramax, which made everybody else shy away from releasing the thing. he and his brother were in the band that did the music and tried to parlay that into something, but the guy is just a total control freak who may or may not have good ideas, but has no ability to work any other way than how he works -- which is totally self-centered.

    the doc is called "overnight".

Good call on The Princess Bride and Raising Arizona.

Also, I noticed Wonder Woman changing her pick to Swingers. That's another hidden gem.

Memento is a fantastic example of a cult classic. It did horribly at the box office, but it's a movie that is spreading by word of mouth. It also helps that you pretty much have to watch it twice.

Great Topic! Good conversation by everyone.
