Imma looking to get one beginning next year, once I get my power chords down. Smoke on the fucking water indeed.

    What would you pros suggest?

best cheap all-tube amp you can get, IMO, is Pignose.

Past that, pawn shops and check with goobers like yourself buying guitars on mortgaged broken dreams  most of the people who 'play' around here play acoustic. I like bonfires more than campfires.

I got an acoustic, but I don't really want to upgrade it. I want a Fender Strat, around $300 bucks. I'll look into the Pignose. I don't really want to play metal, more like some Social D stuff.

so just some distortion, add a couple pedal effects at the most.

I'm sure you can find a strat for under 3.

Gibson Les Paul Epiphone. You can find them for around $300. Sound great distorted or clean. Low action...stay in tune. Great bang for the buck.

    I've had a Strat...eh...wasn't impressed.

Just buy a practice amp that you think sounds good. You can always buy pedals. My practice amp in a Crate. Has delay, chorus, and reverb. Sounds pretty good.

I play for a living, fwiw, and bought a GF a Squire Strat with gig bag for $99. I could gig with it, no kidding.

Whatever grade of strat you want to go for (applies to any make/model guitar, really), go somewhere that has a large selection (if possible) and listen to as many as possible unplugged. See how the wood sounds, pick the best one. If it sounds good unplugged it'll sound good amped. It's the wood that makes or breaks. If it's too loud in the store, press the upper horn/bout or the guitar straight up to your ear.

And don't get overly influenced by shitty action, or great action, or paint job. They can all be set up about the same and looks are always second to sound. As far as amps go it really doesn't matter much until you learn to make the guitar sound good. If you plan to jam with live drummers you'll need at least 25 strong watts. If it's loud rock, 50 watts minimum.

I'd recommend a cheap Line 6 amp or something like that unless you're gonna get real serious about an amp.
