    Tom Hanks, Sissy Spacek. I don't know why Sissy Spacek hasn't done more movies, I think she's fantastic.Of the classics I just can't pick one. There are too many that I think were great, especially among the men.

    current, it's a no-brainer for the guys: edward norton.

    women? streep is probably hands-down the greatest, but i don't like her movies much. so, sue me...

    there's a bunch to pick from: julianne moore, julia roberts, jennifer jason leigh, meg ryan, holly hunter, laura dern, uma thurmon, jennifer connoley, chalieze theron, gwyneth paltrow...seriouisly, tons.

    I agree that there are some fine performers that give consistently fine performances and I don't mean to take anything away from them by their omission in my choices. [I haven't seen many of the new crop, e.g Law.}

    Merle(sp) Streep is my singular choice for female actress. [It's hard not naming Jody Foster, or even Molly Ringwald(sp).]
    As far as guys, I have to go with the guy that played the "villain" in Silence of the Lambs; he's good. However, Humphrey Bogart and Clint Eastwood are my favs. :)

    [Actually there's a British actor[not P. Sellers] that passed away a few years back that might be "best." Damn, what's that guy's name, he was a 'Sir.?']

    I believe John Gileoud(sp) is who I had in mind, Guiness is fine also.

    Lotsa excellent performers mentioned here, but the 2 best IMO:

    Marlon Brando--weird in his personal life, but absolutely brilliant as an actor.

    Meryl Streep--she can do ANYTHING & make it real.

    I admit Nicholson is great but it seems most of his characters are somewhat alike in the fact they are crazy to some degree. To me Hanks has so much more depth, serious, comedy, child like, gangster etc etc. He can carry a whole movie by himself.

    And all of those actresses Larry mentioned are good but not great, not even in the same class as Streep or Spacek.
