My wife and I are avid movie watchers but have some different opinions when it comes to who is the best (opinions) as to who are the best American actors. I am partial to Robert DeNiro and Katherine Hepburn while my wife likes Jimmy Stewert and Merle Streep. Actually we both like Stewert and Hepburn but I have to have my own opinion and like to disagree with her on occasion. ;)

Go with both. Depends on the movie. DeNiro has been taking some real turkey roles lately. After Heat he hasn't done much to look at IMO. Al Pacino, Tom Hanks (kind of a modern day Jimmy Stewert) I like Brando but god he is weird. Robert Duval has to be considered IMO

I wont include the real classic actors because they were before my time and Ive not seen much of their work. so heres mine over the last 25+ years or so

I would agree with DeNiro, Hanks , Pacino and I would include Duvall. Hes been ineverything from Godfather to Days of Thunder.Clint Eastwood, been around since Rawhide, done some classic roles. while not one the best ever I like Tommy Lee Jones(I know he plays the same sort of role all the time). Morgan Freeman and Denzel. I guess Tom Cruise as he gets older(and seemingly wierder) has to be considered as he does less Risky Business type roles.

For Women Streep, Susan Sarandon, and Gwenyth Paltrow(shes often compared to stars of yesterday in part because of her classic beauty). one of my favorites is Sally Field. she can play any role, and has done all different types of characters.

currently, I go with Hanks and Uma Thurman. She has put together a body of work. And she has a nice body.

All time I go with De Niro and Streep.

I'm not that knowledgeable about the "classic" actors, but I'll throw Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall (sp?) out there.

As far as contemporary American actors go, I think Denzel Washington is the best thing going, hands down. I'm not as confident about female actors, but I think a strong case can be made for Jodie Foster.
