Bengals already shopping #1 pick

I got this from a draft site I read.

    Bengals already Holiday shopping?

The Cincinnati Bengals have apparently already sent out feelers for some of the top teams that pick behind them in the upcoming NFL Draft. Cincinnati sent out word at least two weeks ago about the possibility of swapping their pick (which they labeled as a #1 or #2 overall pick at the time) and this was confirmed by two separate sources. Cincinnati did receive minimal interest from the Bears about swapping places and what draft picks Chicago would be willing to part with. Chicago selects 4th in the upcoming draft and apparently has said a 2nd round selection and another later round pick (4th or 5th) could be thrown to Cincinnati as part of the trade compensation. The interesting part is the three teams picking ahead of Chicago in the draft (Cincinnati, Detroit and Houston) don’t look like they will be taking a quarterback. It looks like the Bears are worried about another team moving up and striking a deal with the three aforementioned teams. Of course details are still very sketchy and even if Cincinnati is serious about trading the pick they have ample time to hear other offers and weigh their options.---DJ Boyer

If we could put off giving them the number 2 until next year and Miami's 4th, I'd almost be willing to do the trade.

nope... not for the cost of the pick... I'd be willing to trade up to maybe Chicago's pick... but another #3 pick would be HIGH when we could sign a few more ppl with that money

Cost is relative, the rookie cap limits what we can spend.

the choice we are going to have to make is do we over pay a FA and still miss out on filling other positions or do we get a guy who's price is limited by the rookie cap and still have money left to do a few things. To be honest, there isn't any one in FA worth over paying. Moving up for one guy isn't going to skew the cap that bad.

the rookie's price still counts against our overall cap figure... rookie salaries aren't seperate... the only thing the rookie cap does is limits how much we can spend... for example we have $10 mil. under the SALARY CAP... a deal like Peppers' last year cost us $5 mil. a year... that means that the ONE player we went up and got would cost us 1/2 of what we have available.

doesn't matter. I don't know why so many people get so gunshy about spending on first round picks - you get the player you're after, and then you pay him. You must do so regardless, I'd rather get the guy we want than be cheap and settle. We've got 11 mil, and by the time draft picks are to be signed, Gilbert will have been cut allowing more relief. We've done a lot with a lot less, including an 11 pick.

We couldn't really get by with a second next year. Has to be this year. Otherwise they're basically getting nothing up front for doing the trade.

It'll probably be a net of around 2 mil in salary difference between the 1st pick and the 9th, but we'll cover that by axing Gilbert, Weinke, and Walls. the Rookie Cap is a subset of the overall, that's true. but we have to spend all of that money regardless of who and when we pick. o you're saying you'd rather spend 5 mil on Plummer than Manning, Leftwich, or Palmer?

To me the Panthers would need to see the complete draft field before making that trade. They need to be sure that the guy they want won't be there at #9. If it is McGahee they want, they will need to know he is coming out. Also, is he that much better than LJ? If the Panthers are in love with Palmer or Leftwich then they might go up to get them - but at this point I think they want McGahee or Larry Johnson in round 1. Going up to get Rogers at #1 doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. WR at #1 are risky and they could get a Roy Williams at #9 possibly if he changes his mind and enters. Its way too early IMO to even consider going up.

Later round steal types I like right now would be (3rd or later):
    Quentin Griffin
    Avon Cobourne
    Brian St. Pierre
    Terrence Edwards

    Quick observations:
Grossman didn't impress me and needs to return to school. Taylor Jacobs looked good. Roy Williams looked unreal and needs to come out now. He could go #3 to Houston if available. Simms looked good passing but lacks mobility bigtime. Wouldn't kill me to grab him in the second ATP however, he has positive tools to develop. Quentin Griffin will be a great 3rd down guy in the NFL. Great quickness. John Navarre of Mich is a good heady QB with good upside. Ragone is being under valued right now and if he makes to us in the second I would grab him immediately. If Rashaun Woods runs sub 4.4 he goes very early in this draft. Lee Suggs looks like he has returned to form. He is a bigtime running back with power and speed. Oh and Andre Woolfolk could be great one day. Awesome talent.

Just curious if you're basing this on some information or if these are the players you want?

    No thanks to Larry Johnson.

Quentin Griffin is a little dude. 5'6". But he had moves. I'd put him as a day 2 grab.

I DO NOT see us trading up for a QB. We might, but I doubt it.
