Just wanted to share what I have been playing with today, in case anyone is thinking of buying Windows 7. I have grown to distrust professional computer review sites.

    All tests run on:
    EVGA X58 SLI, Corsair 750, Coolermaster V8, open bench, stock speeds, Intel i7 920, 12 GB DDR3 1600 (2.5GB recognized in XP), Areca 1230 (1GB cache), 2 WD Veloci 300 in raid0, ATI 4890, HannsG 28 monitor, Samsung 20X dvd on Intel ICH10R.

I created 3 different raid0 partitions, all 200GB each, and did a fresh install of Win XP, XP64, and Win7, in that order, one per partition. The latest drivers and MS updates installed, along with winrar 3.9 and HDTune 2.55

    Results:

    Windows XP
    Winrar 4019 average
    HDTune 223 average, 462 burst
Copy VIDEO_TS folder from dvd to OS drive: 5min:18sec
Copy MPEG2 folder from SVCD to OS drive: 7min:31sec

    WinXP64-bit
    Winrar 4000 average
    HDTune: 195 average, 463 burst
Copy VIDEO_TS folder from dvd to OS drive 5:18
    Copy MPEG folder - 7:31

    Windows 7 x64RTM:
    Winrar 2941 average
    HDTune: 166 average, 448 burst
    Copy VIDEO_TS folder - 10:20
    Copy MPEG folder - 6:59

Verdict: Unless you are an EXTREME multitasker, more than 3GB of ram is a waste of money, at least for most people, IF ypu play with photoshop, plus decode video, plus have a dozen other programs running at the same time , a lot of ram and a 64-bit OS might be a good idea

Windows 7 might be faster than Vista, but unless you really need something new it offers, either version of XP has better performance than the latest and greatest MS operating system. It is not worth paying good money for it.

Gaming, well, when DX11 games come out, you might be forced to upgrade. But I see no reason why anyone else would want Windows 7. It really Should have been a free update/fix to Vista

that may be the worst benchmark test ever - the final claim of not needing more than 3gb of RAM unless you're EXTREME multitasking is not shown by the testing of file copying at all...

    damn.

In reality, Win7 64-bit is lighter and leaner than Vista by far, and with massive improvements in network code and disk caching and security and other behind the scenes things, its even faster than XP by a good bit. It rox0rz.
