push ups, pull ups and all other calisthenic exercise does not need the recovery that weight bearing exercise does.

do them everyday until you are not sore.

If you have done no weight training in your life or none in a long time then you go and do 3 sets of pushups to exhaustion, you will be sore for days.

    I'll take the bait.

Your muscles and tendons are sore because they were damged during the workout. They grow stronger everytime they hear. If you are sore they are still healing and working out during that time gives you no new gain and exposes you to injury.

That's what trainers have always told me. Makes sense.

You gain muscle fibers during the repair process. That's why your muscles get bigger. Without time to repair, your work yields no benefits. That's also why you see people start to work out, get bigger, and then stay around that size despite adding resistance every week. They keep doing the same routine over and over again.

That's what I've read. That's why you rotate working out different parts of the body each workout. One part repairs while the other gets worked out

Just do different exercises each time you work a muscle group. At your age you don't need to be doing multiple exercises for each muscle group so say you are working shoulders one day, do 3 sets of presses and thats it. Next time you work your shoulders do lateral raises instead.

Also, try to use dumbbells for everything you can. They are way better for your body. Bars are too restrictive.

do them every day and by day 5 the soreness will be almost gone.

calisthenics are different than weight bearing exercise. why do you think the military PTs their recruits with them all day? because the recovery is faster and you are more quickly able to condition yourself to lift your body weight.

That's fucking retarded. If you muscles are sore from a workout, there is nothing good that comes out of working them more. You gain nothing and risk injury. Don't compare archaic military practice to the proper training of a 50 year old, out of shape man.

Someone who has not done any weight training before or none in a long time will be very sore from pushups alone. Working them the next day is stupid and pointless.
