Beason - what would make him a guinea pig?

Has the team refused to offer them to players they are resigning, or are they just refusing to offer them to rookies who have never proved a dang thing in the NFL?

 

The Smith extension has them, as will Pep's extension (especially if they go off Freeney's deal) they are standard in most contracts which is why the resistance to them is so weird.

 

JOHNSON DEAL GIVES HUYGHUE AN OUT

The fact that the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 draft did not receive an option bonus will (or at least should) also make it easier for the Panthers to end their impasse with the No. 25 overall pick in the draft, linebacker Jon Beason.

The Panthers don't want to pay an option bonus to Beason. Huyghue's concern (we believe) is that if he's the only agent in round one whose client didn't get an option bonus, that fact will be used against him aggressively in recruiting.

Now that the No. 2 overall selection has no option bonus, Huyghue is less likely to be slammed for not getting one for Beason.

We suspect that Huyghue and the Panthers will be getting their mitts on the Johnson deal, and will "borrow" the structure of it to put something together that will allow a similar contract to be negotiated with Beason. For slightly less money, of course.

Is the offer in the ballpark as #24 pick

Brandon Meriweather went to NE as #24 first round , and he held out but signed . he played with Beason @ Miami (FL) Hurricanes. Or does Beason want More $$$$$ ?


The bad: Meriweather's character is an issue after an ugly on-field kicking incident against Florida International and an altercation that involved a shooting by him in self defense. Despite his success at safety, his shoulder problems could limit him to a short career at that position with a gut feeling he will break down within a few seasons.






According to NFL sources, Meriweather got a five-year deal worth $8.75 million, with $6 million guaranteed. Escalators and incentives could increase the total value to $11.6 million.
In camp this week ,Meriweather made some rookie mistakes. He twice lost his shoe during plays, but also almost came up with an interception in the day's only practice session, which was not open to the public.
What did coach Bill Belichick think of his first look at his first-round pick? "He has a long way to go," he said.
Belichick said the Patriots plan to find out where Meriweather fits best.
"He's played a lot of different positions in college," said Belichick. "He's played the nickel position, the corner position, the safety position. We'll use him in some different spots and see how it goes. People on our team are going to have to have some versatility and play different spots anyway, so he falls into that category."
