That could bring a world of unwelcome scrutiny and I'm not sure that you could prove the idiot was trying to hurt Beason's reputation as much as he was trying to impress some other folks by claiming he's tight enough with him to be around those sort of activities.

IOW He was trying to inflate his rep, not bring down Beason's

I think Beason's award would be nothing unless there was a countersuit for defamation. I dunno. I do think there would be a way of stating there was provable damage to Beason's reputation on the drug issue, only in the idea that his job depends on not taking drugs.

 

I doubt beason could win much from him in a countersuit, especially since his lawyer will be getting a piece. Frye's suit still has a leg to stand on (even if it's smaller now that the criminal charges got thrown out) I mean if the jury thinks Beason punched him that's enough the standard of evidence in civil suits is less than reasonable doubt.

 

oh, I wouldn't expect he'd do it to gain money. It's usually done to force the civil suit to go away. But there would be a basis, I guess, if there was enough motivation.
