Over40, the past few years, UC basketball is running close to 100%. Even Donald has a degree :scared2: You won't hear the sports editors who usually do their UC hatchet jobs mentioning the improving graduation rate.

This will interest you guys. AD Bob Goin talks with Post writer Jason Williams about UC's legal issues (Cincinnati Post 8/23/03):

Williams: Changing the subject. With basketball players getting into trouble with the law again this offseason, do you re-evaluate and implement stricter disciplinary guidelines?

Goin: In some of these cases, we did all the right things and still got bad press. On the one (Armein Kirkland, who was arrested and charged this month on misdemeanor counts of assault and domestic violence), I'm not so sure that our student-athlete didn't do the right things and took all the right steps by calling the police. But I'm not judging that.

We will discuss it. We're going to take a hard look at it. And that's not pointing guilt fingers. It's a prevention program that I'm going to try to evaluate. How I'm going to do it, I have no idea. I'm not going to cut legs off before they deserve to be cut off.

No matter what I say -- people make dumb decisions. I just want to make sure that this department is doing everything to tell the athletes just do what's right.

If you walk into the (athletic department) mailroom, there's a letter from me to all staff and all coaches letting them know that I'm not happy. Check the date.

(The memo is dated June 27, the day after incoming recruit Robert Whaley was placed on one-year probation by a Kansas court after a plea agreement lessened two felony counts of aggravated battery to two misdemeanor counts. In May, forward Eric Hicks was arrested and suspended indefinitely stemming from a fracas in a nightclub. The memo reads, in part, that Goin planned to visit with all athletic department "staff, coaches and student-athletes to clearly indicate the responsibility that they have as representatives to this athletic department. -- I envision additional sanctions, including missing game opportunities, on those individuals that do not accept the responsibility of good behavior while serving as representatives of this University.")

Can I snuff it out? I don't think so, but I can make every effort to give all the goods and services that I can. I'm never going to feel like I'm responsible for the behavior of 500 athletes. I think it's a mistake for the media to think that an athletic director or a coach should be in bed with those kids 24 hours a day.

Williams: Are you concerned that the trouble some basketball players have gotten into will hinder your chances of being invited into another conference?

Goin: I don't think that negative publicity helps anything. There are no plusses in it. But I don't know that it hinders, because there's a big picture. -- I'm not saying because everyone does it, it's OK. But every university -- the greatest universities in the country -- have some social behavior of men and women on their campus -- athletes and non-athletes -- who bring embarrassment to their families and their universities.
