49ers Release Men's Basketball Schedule, Niners Boast Record Six Nationally-Televised Contests
    Charlotte49ers.com
    September 1, 2005

Halton Arena - In their first season in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Charlotte 49ers have been chosen for a record six nationally-televised contests, including four in A-10 action, it was announced today as the 49ers and Atlantic 10 Conference released the 2005-06 men's basketball schedule.

The 49ers schedule includes nine contests vs. 2005 post-season teams. Five of the contests vs. postseason teams are non-conference selections. In addition, five games will be played against teams in ESPN.com's Preseason Top 50.

The 49ers 14-game regular-season home slate includes non-conference battles with NCAA second-rounder Mississippi State, Davidson, Valparaiso and Indiana (ESPN2) as well as A-10 battles with Rhode Island in the Niners A-10 opener, Xavier, defending champion George Washington, Dayton (ESPN), Temple, Richmond, former C-USA foe Saint Louis and Duquesne.

"It's another very demanding schedule but one that will put us in position to be chosen as an at-large NCAA Tournament team should we not be able to win the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament," head coach Bobby Lutz said. "The non-conference schedule, highlighted by Indiana, Mississippi State and Wake Forest is very difficult. In addition to those three highly-perceived difficult games, we have a number of tough games with people like Davidson and at Louisiana-Lafayette, who was in the (NCAA) Tournament. It's a very complete schedule. As for the Atlantic 10 schedule, it's very tough the first half with five out seven road games after our home opener. If we can survive that then we are going to be in great position with a lot of home games down the stretch to take advantage of our home crowd."

Charlotte's national TV games include a showdown with ACC opponent Wake Forest, Feb. 11, on ABC. Charlotte's non-conference home game with Indiana, Dec. 19 is on ESPN2. In Atlantic 10 play, the 49ers home game vs. Dayton (Feb. 4) will be shown on ESPN, while road games at Saint Joseph's (Jan. 17 - ESPN2); at Fordham (Feb. 19 - ESPN) and at George Washington (Mar. 4 - ESPN) will all be nationally-televised.

The schedule includes five games vs. 2005 NCAA Tournament participants, including non-conference foes Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State and Wake Forest as well as A-10 champ George Washington. The 49ers have four games against teams that advanced to the NIT, including non-conference foes Davidson and Indiana and A-10 opponents Saint Joseph's and Temple.

Once into A-10 play, the 49ers will face defending champion George Washington, twice, as well as 2005 NIT qualifiers Saint Joseph's and Temple. January sees the 49ers battling Rhode Island, Xavier and George Washington at Halton Arena. In February, the Niners face Dayton, Temple, Richmond and Saint Louis at home. The Niners final home game is March 1 vs. Duquesne. Four A-10 teams are listed in ESPN.com's Top 50, including George Washington (#24), Temple (#31) and Xavier (#46). The 49ers are #27 in ESPN.com's preseason picks.

The 49ers begin the season at the BCA Classic in Wyoming, Nov. 13-15. The 49ers, who have won 10 straight at Halton Arena, will have their home-opener against 2005 NCAA second-rounder Mississippi State (Nov. 23). Charlotte will face Pfeiffer in their lone preseason exhibition game, Nov. 2.
