    wtf.

Sportscenter reported that the Marlins are interested in either North Jersey or Vegas.

I know that the NY area can theoretically support up to 4 MLB teams, but would a NJ team get support in Yankeeland?

    Wild...

A North Jersey team would have to pay a huge territorial rights fee to the Yankees & Mets for coming into their market. I think this is simply leverage to try to get the politicos in South Florida to cough up more cash for that new ballpark the Marlins want next to the Orange Bowl . .

But then again, Portland Marlins or the Las Vegas Marlins could work in 2007 ;) . . . I think a resolution to the Marlins future will come into focus next season. All a city would have to do is provide a temporary place to play and a new ballpark site (see DC with the former Expos last offseason) to bring the Marlins to their burg.

WBTV news just reported that Charlotte is among 3 cities mentioned by the Marlins. Of course they didnt mention the other two.

They also interviewed some pessimistic local official that thinks we will have a team some day but its 25 years down the road.

I think the Marlins said they were looking at Charlotte, Las Vegas, and Portland. The local officials I've heard all seem to think Charlotte is on the list soley to try to invent up some competition so that they can get someone to build them a stadium.

I thought I read somewhere of a plan by a developer to build a 38,000 seat domed stadium over in 3rd Ward (the area of the Govt. Center & Adams Mark Hotel) awhile ago (Might've been Charlotte Bizness Journal or in Wednesday's NEXT BIG DEAL section of the Observer). Perhaps the Marlins and this developer need to have a meet & greet :) . . .

THE BOTTOM LINE: Charlotte would be the smallest 3 team market in the country. I think Tampa Bay (NHL, MLB, NFL) has 1.8 million people. We have 1.5 million (?). Could we handle 3 pro teams? Where would the money come from to finance a ballpark? Now that we have tax incremental financing, this would be the only way to get a ballpark built in Uptown w/o city/county tax money (which is going towards the arena right now). Charlotte Marlins in 2008? A long shot at best but hey, you never know :)
