Are you saying that God saves who he's gonna save and damns who he's gonna damn?

I think what he's saying is salvation is not earnable, it is something you accept. A gift being held out for you to take. It is a conditional gift, though...and the condition is that you desire to accept the giver as the Messiah. You believe he's the way, and you've accepted the gift. If at some point in life, you decide that you were wrong about his being the one true way, then by default, you don't believe in the gift of salvation through Jesus anymore so you wouldn't believe you had the gift you thought you had. So you wouldn't really 'lose' salvation, but you would no longer believe in it, and you can't, logically, lose something that you don't believe you ever had.

Well, Thelt went off the reservation with that last post, but now I agree with William.

I'm buying a Lotto ticket later.

I think what he's saying makes sense. It's worded a little funky but he's correct.

Thelt is saying that once a person accepts the gift of salvation, he can do anything -- including renouncing his faith -- and still be welcomed in heaven. The Bible says something else.

I didn't read it that way....but maybe he can clarify. It's a conditional gift, and if you truly accept it, you desire to be more like the giver...so you don't really have a 'free pass' to do anything. So if he's saying that, then he is wrong.

I read in his post that you can't earn salvation; you can only accept it. Which is true.

Well, I'm doing research on my sermon for this week and guess what, the scripture from this week's lectionary is the story of Jesus being baptized by John.

What do you all make of Jesus, the one who is without sin and needs no repentance, being baptized? Is it an issue or not?

I've got my own idea, but I'm interested in what you all think.

If you can not earn your salvation then how can you lose it? If you only get to keep it if you do certain things then that is the same thing as earning it.
