Sixers’ Randolph Suffers Gruesome Ankle Injury

Shavlik Randolph, the 76ers' second-year forward, suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle during today's practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and will undergo surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center tonight.

Enyi Okereke was to perform the surgery, with Sixers team physician Jack McPhilemy present during the procedure, the team said.

According to Sixers forward Andre Iguodala, Randolph was playing defense in the lane as Iguodala drove to the basket. The two players collided in midair, and the 6-foot-10 Randolph lost his balance and rolled his left ankle as he landed on the floor.

Witnesses said that as Randolph lay on the floor in pain, players turned away so as not to look at what appeared to be a gruesome injury. Randolph was attended to by Kevin Johnson, the team's head athletic trainer, before paramedics came in and took the player to Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

A Sixers spokesman said Randolph was being evaluated and that an updated report on his condition would be announced later today.

Iguodala said that the way the injury looked, it was comparable to when Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann suffered a broken leg when hit by New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor during a Monday Night Football game in the 1980s.

"It's something that you've never seen before," said Iguodala, who was not injured in the collision. "Hopefully, it looked worse than it really was but we don't know yet. But I think he handled himself well. It looked like he was in a lot of pain. But he was joking with us and he made a couple of jokes, like he'd be fine."

Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said he was near the mid-court line when the accident occurred and didn't see exactly what happened.

"I've never seen anything like it," he said of the injury. "It was bad."

"It just reinforces how fortunate we are when we play this game and you never really have injuries, to go out and try and put your best foot forward, because you never know when something can happen. So it kind of reinforces how fortunate we were."

Cheeks said he knew the injury was bad just from the horrified looks of the other players.

"To see [the injury] and then see the reaction of the players, I think probably that was more than anything," he said. "Certainly, Shav was our most concern. But then when you see the reaction of the players, I thought that was more telling than anything."

Cheeks called off the rest of the practice after the injury.

Yeah, you never want to see that happen to anybody, sucks for him, is there a Dook NBA curse? I'm sure Sly will say no, and there are obviously some exceptions, but...

If he's have stayed in college, Coach K would have taught him how to avoid that injury.

That's horrible. I feel wholeheartedly responsible for this. I don't know if people remember me defending Shav after his sophomore season here, but I did. And I was let down by his junior year like all dookies, but I still supported him.

And I added him to my fantasy team the night before this injury happened. I hope he's ok careerwise. I had just heard it was a broken ankle, they didn't say it was this bad :(

Hate to see that on anybody, even a dookie that I told you so about, but.....

Been his knock ever since he he arrived at dook. All the potential, but can't stay healthy. Bad luck, frail or just plain stupid and can't run while playing basketball, his best playing years are behind him in High School.

If pretty well is breaking double digits one time, as one dookie described him going off for 12pts, lmao! Errrr, then 4.5ppg, 4.2rbs, .545FT%, .479FG% then he is allover it.

He has always had high expectations and have never met them, his height and HS days are what got him this far. Even Haywood who all the dookies want to give shit for sucking has done better than the Shavster who you say has done pretty well or as sly said solid. Since Haywood as done better then me has to be at least at the good level.:whip:

I've got Haywood on my fantasy team too. Preaching to the choir on that one. I was so glad baby shaq never developed in college.

I still say starting in the NBA while not being drafted is doing pretty well. And I think he only started 1-2 games before he got hurt, he was just promoted over Webber.
