I went to the gym this morning. I was about 40 mins into my workout and was on my 3rd set of seated rows. Well, I heard something pop and my lower back. My back hurts like CRAP! It's an acute throbbing pain. Every time I walk and put pressure on my right foot, it hurts even more.

I've done this before a while ago and never had it this bad before. Should I ice or get a heating pad? Lay on my stomach? damn this hurts!

the new rule of thumbs for sports injuries is to rotate heat and cold. heat speeds blood to the area to help oxygenate the injured muscle. cold helps reduce swelling.

anytime you hear a pop, that can't be good! if you slipped or ruptured a disc, you'll know it soon enough.

if you have numbness on your right butt cheek along with your right foot, you've pinched a sciatic nerve.

lay any way it's comfortable until you know what's going on; tomorrow you'll have a better idea. but i get the feeling you're gonna be paying the doctor a visit.

I feel better today. I can transfer weight to my right side but there is still a little pain there just not as much as yesterday. My back is still sore since I worked that muscle group out yesterday. I'll give it a few more days and evaluate again. I'll keep taking advils and icing and heating it. Much better than yesterday :woot:

    Thanks for the tips

    Fred nails it again.
Rest it for a few days and needless to say "don't do those reps again for awhile".

Had you messed up a disc, you'd be in amazing pain about now. Probably just a minor torn or pulled muscle putting pressure on a nerve causing the foot discomfort.

Ibuprofen not only helps the pain but helps reduce inflammation. If you don't have a history of GI bleeds or ulcers, try Motrin/Advil 800mg every 8 hours around the clock (6am-2pm-10pm) for a while but make sure you take it with food. Take it routinely for a good 3-5 days if it hurts or not and then reassess the pain.

Hit the doc's office if you have any major changes in pain level or numbness.

BTW- Ibuprofen should not be taken if you are taking any lithium products for bipolar disorder. They can counter-act each other. :xyzthumbs

    good call fred

i've been dealing with mild sciatica on my left side for a few years now which was brought on by years of jogging, high impact stuff. it has not required surgery to date but i've had to watch it.

a word to savio tho, it will never completely go away. my guess is that you're a young guy so dont do anything that will make it worse or you'll live to regret it. i gotta friend who is a tri-athlete and he had his L4/L5 shaved and has been able to continue competition. he was lucky. others i know have not been so lucky. although i cannot run anymore i have been lifting/body building regularly since my diagnosis. just learn what you can and cannot do.

It's a little stiffer today than it was yesterday and same with my right leg. It's not as painful though it does every now and then have sharp pain but not like it has for the past two days. I'm still icing and heating...along with a couple advils every 6-8 hours....

I'm never never never gonna live again without those "patches" in my house. You put on of those on a sore spot, go to bed and YOUR amazed when you wake up.
