cool, that makes 3. I think Lainey walks, and Math says he walks "fairly regularly." So, that's 4 total.

i walk and bike a ride, i hardly call that exercize. running 2 miles is. chunk in some calistentics then you have a regiment. a stroll does not constitute lagitimate exercize.

That's why we walk for exercise. It's better on my knees than jogging.

I alternate between aerobics (45 min daily) and riding a recumbent bike for 10 miles. I do either plus weights at least 5 times a week.

Does that qualify for you? :)

Exactly. That is exactly right. We can argue pro and cons of ANY DIET all day but bottom line is that the Atkins diet takes the weight off fast and can keep it off without losing muscle mass and without starving yourself.

Now lets talk about possible benefits:
Extended Longevity: From Harvard University and the journal Science, 2003: This study looked at the scientific reasons that rats fed low calorie diets live longer. These researchers used mice that had been genetically altered to have no insulin receptors in their fat. These mice were able to eat much more than the control mice and yet they did not gain weight and they lived much longer than the control mice. The researchers concluded that lower impact of insulin is the likely mechanism that extended the life of the mice.

Cancer: From Harvard University and the International Journal of Cancer, 2003: A group of researchers studied 88,647 women from the Nurses Health Study for 18 years. They noted that they found no evidence that meat consumption was a risk factor for breast cancer. In fact, they noted that vegetarians had a slightly increased chance of breast cancer.

From Harvard University, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and ScienceDaily Magazine, 2002: A Harvard research team used 18 years of data from 88,000 women who were participating in the famous Nurses Health Study to investigate whether a diet high in foods that easily raise blood glucose levels increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. They found that women who were overweight, sedentary, and had the highest glycemic load (ate the most carbs) increased their risk of pancreatic cancer by 250%.

Kidney Problems: From Harvard University and the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, 2003: In this study, researchers studied 1,624 women in the Nurses Health Study for 11 years. They found that a high protein intake was not associated with kidney function decline in women with normal kidney function at baseline. However, they did confirm what medical science has thought for years that the women who had abnormal kidney function at baseline should avoid high protein intakes.

From the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Denmark and the International Journal of Obesity, 1999: The researchers conducted this study to assess the renal affects of high vs low protein diets. They found moderate adaptive alterations in renal size but found no indications of adverse affects on kidney function.

Bone Health: From Tufts University and the USDA, 2002: This study found that increasing protein intake had a favorable effect on bone density in elderly subjects supplemented with calcium and vitamin D.

Overall Health: From the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Washington University in St. Louis, The University of Colorado, and The New England Journal of Medicine, 2003: These multi-center researchers conducted a 12 months study of a low carbohydrate, high protein diet with the conventional high carbohydrate, low fat, low calorie diet. They found that the low carbohydrate group lost more weight at 3, 6 and 12 months and had lower triglyceride levels, and improved HDL cholesterol levels ("good" cholesterol).

From the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and The New England Journal of Medicine, 2003: A team of medical researchers compared the effects of a very low carbohydrate diet with the effects of a traditional low fat, low calorie diet among obese multi-racial men and women, some of which had diabetes and metabolic syndrome. At the end of 6 months, the low carbohydrate diet participants lost more weight, had greater drops in triglyceride levels, and improved insulin sensitivity.
From the University of Cincinnati and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2003: These researchers placed 53 obese women on one of two diets for 6 months. The first was an ad libitum, very low carbohydrate diet while the second was a low fat, low calorie diet. They found the very low carbohydrate group lost more weight and more body fat than the low fat group (even though the very low carbohydrate group was not restricted on the amount of calories they ate and during the study). They also concluded that the very low carbohydrate diet did not have detrimental effects on cardiac disease risk factors.

    THIS IS MY FAVORITE:

From Duke University and The American Journal of Medicine, 2002: In this study researchers report that a study of the Atkins diet shows, "...a low-carbohydrate diet can indeed lead to significant and sustained weight loss." They placed subjects on a ketogenic, very low carb diet of less than 25 grams per day for 6 months. 80% of the participants stayed on the diet throughout the 6 months and they lost an average of 10% of their body weight which amounted to about 20 pounds. They also reported that totoal cholesterol levels decreased, LDL ("bad" cholesterol) decreased, HDL ("good cholesterol") increased, tryglycerided decreased, much to the researchers surprise. They conclude there were "no serious adverse effects..."

Yes, a recumbent bike is one of the bikes that you sit down to ride.
