Most diets don't starve your body of essential nutrients, they just lower the calorie intake. Atkins is dangerous, and like I've mentioned about 100 times, the long-term studies that are out there show that people on Atkins are far less likely to KEEP that weight off than other normal diets.

That's only because they do not stick to the diet, it is a life long commitment, kind of like being baptist. And if you go back to eating as you ate before you lost weight during the weight loss phase then of course you are going to gain it back you silly billy.

Well, it sounded like you were implying that in historical periods, people died at 30 years old because of a meat only diet. I may be wrong, but that's the way it sounded.

If Atkins lived to 72 following the same regimen, it would tend to negate that point.

In short, you can't have it both ways.

There are quite a few people who are against the Atkins diet on here and I can respect the fact that are willing to say so. I do however feel that if a person can find a diet that works for them, then that's the one they need to stick with. I've been overweight the majority of my life and have tried counting calories, counting fat grams, following the food pyramid, etc, and none of these worked for me. I have found something that works and will prove to me and everyone else that I can keep the weight off. My mom went on the Atkins a year and a half ago (she's on maintenance right now) and lost 65 pounds and has been able to keep it off. I have been on the Atkins for almost 9 weeks, spent 3 1/2 days in NC off of it, and found out today that I have lost a total of 30 pounds. Should I switch to a different diet?? I'm sure some of you will say yes, but I'm sticking to something that works for me!!!!

i think that was the upshoot of what some critics said a while back in the media, that while atkins may possibly be bad for you, being overweight is much worse.

Sounds a bit like choosing between the lesser of two evils when you put it that way. Not sure I like that idea.

Well, I'm sold on Atkins for now. Eating LOW carb, not NO carb has been very effective for me and DH. Not just the weight loss but controlling his diabetes as well. Not to mention the fact that DH has been able to forgo his high blood pressure meds as well. At first, when we were new to low carbing, we had to plan and think about what we were going to eat. Now, it has become second nature. Daily, we eat salads, veggies and meat. We get a healthy ratio of fat, carbs and protein. The weight loss has become the bonus to the better health.

Oh yeah, after I gained 50 pounds from a HUGE depression, I decided to do something about it...Atkins. I have lost 32 pounds since May 1 and I'm feeling better than I have in years the next 18 pounds will come off as they can. DH has lost 48 pounds. Also, he is being supervised by his physicians.
