Both of those studies were, surprise surprise, funded by the Atkins foundation. No bias there. More importantly, they are BOTH using extremely small samples (like 60 or fewer people), and both are 6-months in length with weight-loss being the only thing being tested. Yes, we know people lose weight with it. The question is, can they keep it off, and are they suffering health-related problems because of it.

can't find the link to the Harvard study directly, but here's the meat (hehe) of the issue:

Blackburn of Harvard says dieters can get dramatic weight losses without eliminating food groups. "It's the junk food that's killing us, and if people would cut back on the junk food, they'd cut calories, lose weight, improve their blood cholesterol and prevent heart disease and cancer."

so duke and harvard's opinions are for sale?

the reason atkins funded them was because no one else would and he wanted reputable institutions to make an opinion his diet.

Bottom line - any diet has good and bad effects on the body. Atkins takes off the pounds, that is proven.

I worked out with a trainer a few years back and discussed many dietary options. Though I never considered Atkins, he did mention that any diet that cuts out a food group (protein, fat or carbs) is unhealthy. Just my 2 cents on this topic.

As had been mentioned numerous times on this board weight gain and loss is simply calories in and calories out. If Atkins works for you, have at it. If you prefer moderating your portions and exercising, have at that.

In the end you gotta do what you like to do. I for one love bread and prefer to cut back and run an extra mile than cut out the occasional dinner roll or bagel.

Y'all got to realize that Atkins does NOT eliminate carbs. It specifies that you manage your carb intake.

Since Im hypoglycemic Im supposed to be on a low carb diet anyways. But I will not eliminate any food group for the sake of loosing weight fast. Exersising lowers blood sugar anyways and I find Im on a one way street no matter what I do. So when I go to ride my bike I have to eat something to keep up my blood sugar so I dont tire out as fast. Im finding Im leaning towards eating more fruits and veggies. I find some foods will raise my sugar but then it will make my sugar drop fast and I feel like shit again anyways. Stop eating after a certain hour doesnt work for me either. Since all this is new to me Im still finding the foods that will stick with me and what will help me loose weight at the same time. Im going towards counting the calories and finding an exersise routine that wont make me feel like shit afterwards. I have a struggle ahead of me but Im hoping I can find a nitch that I will be comfortable with and not have my body screaming at me to feed it all the time lol.
