Most likely becuase some Gorilla tore there arms off and bashed there skull in with their own limbs. Just Kidding, I agree it just doesn't seem to be for everyone. I'm Italian and I need pasta and tomatoes and bread.

I've been on Atkins for about 3 mths. Recently I come off for a weekend a month and eat whatever - then back on.

I have lost 30 lbs and have not at all put ANY back on. I am really kinda skinny now but I just like the diet.

The only side effect (long term) that I have heard of is that it makes your liver work harder than a normal diet. Well, so does drinking a beer or some wine.

    I feel ok with it

Honorary Italian here I guess. If you are going to marry one, you'd better like those things. I don't really see how I could give them up either.

We all agree that obesity is bad. Most people aren't obese, although in the US (and even higher on this board) it's an amazingly high percentage. Regardless, obesity is not the question here, it's Atkins being both unsafe and ineffective.

The important part is that Atkins diets are CONSISTENTLY shown to result in re-gaining the weight. In study after study, weight loss reduction in intake and increase in exercise is the only reliable way to reduce weight, and the "diets" involved usually involve medium-carb, low fat intake...

Regarding health, there have been zero studies from reliable independent sources that show Atkins being safe. High protein and high fat diets have in the past been strongly linked to the development of serious medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

Neal Barnard, MD, president of the Physicians Commission for Responsible Medicine, a non-profit research group based in Washington, says:

"Low-carb diets have been linked to increased frequency of colon cancer, formation of kidney stones, kidney disease, and even osteoporosis... The reason for the health worries is in large part due to red meat. People who eat meat every day have three times greater risk of developing colon cancer. And then there is the problem of the kidneys. They aren't designed to work on an oil slick of fat."

the links go on and on. Atkins is dangerous, people just are so desperate to lose weight and so lazy about doing it the right way, they've latched on to this absurdity.

actually, recent studies by Duke and Harvard have said otherwise. Your data is old...get out of the 80's.

It's not about the majority. According to data stored in the National Weight Control Registry that monitors the diets of more than 2,600 people who maintained at least a 30-pound weight loss for a year or more, less than 1 percent follow a diet similar to the Atkins program. Most follow high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets.
