yeah, i don't mean to suggest that people shouldn't look for treatment for things they feel are deficient in their life. i'm just wondering about where people draw the line between "kooky" and "autistic".

my brother was in a car accident. before the accident he was incredibly intense and his mind was racing all the time. you couldn't help but get tense around him he was so revved up. he was a numbers freak -- calculating things like gratuities for service down to the penny (not necessarily quick, just fastidious). after his car accident (he was pretty much unconcious for a week or so) he was mr mellow. he lost his edge. he was noticably less able to focus, but he was way easier to be around.

now i can't say i like the new version over the old version, but he's definitely improved in some aspects of his being. so the question is, which one is my brother? and which one is your dad? is your new dad the same person as your old dad? is the question even a valid one?

anyway, i don't want to sound judgmental or negative or anything. i just think there's an interesting debate to be had over what kind of behaviors warrant medication. i'm schizophrenic, i need meds. i'm bi-polar, i need meds. i'm hyper, i need meds. i'm depressed, i need meds. i'm weird, i need meds. i'm anxious, i need meds. i'm moody, i need meds. i don't feel like dealing, i need meds. i'm bored, i need meds.

I agree. Asperger's is the new disease that all the suburban kids now are afflicted with instead of ADD.
"Wah, no one likes me, no one understands me, I am different, I have Aspergers."

Side note, yes this is my first post. I have been spending all my time here on Tetris.

    Interesting Article

In this month's New Yorker there is a great article written by a man who has Asperger's Syndrome. The article is basically a memoir about his childhood and his years of trying to adapt to society. You would love this article and it might help you greatly in understanding your father's psyche.

Man, that's deep. I'm sure the "new dad" is the same as the old dad, just on antidepressants. I just like that now we can carry on conversations about multiple issues. Just the other day he called to see if my wife's parents were ok after the Peru earthquake. He would have never done that before.
