In other words, this is why we have the Old Testament.

I think some of the stick you've got in this thread, is from the line in bold above. You're not `forced' to do anything - you don't want to do it and "be around people who are Jewish' - then don't! My view is different. I would soak up that experience and love it - but we're all drawn to different religions and a desire to learn about specific things. I respect that it may not be `your thing', so I would politely suggest you leave the project. In my view, Judaism is a very sacred thing to a great many people. Just your attitude in posing this question leads me to believe you don't want to learn from it - and they will most likely pick up on this.

That being said - what do you want to know? I'm loving my studies and the more I read and experience, the more I'm realizing that I've found my fit.

Have you read "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok?.....Excellent novel exploring Jewish culture in America.

No, I've not yet - but if it comes recommended, then it'll be on my list :).

Welcome to the Board, by the way. I don't think I've seen you around these parts :).

What's the big deal with jews? They don't force their religion on anyone else like the hard-core southern baptists. And they are usually pretty up-front about what they are thinking as opposed to being sweet to your face and then talking shit about you when you leave and saying it was a 'prayer.'

:agreed: It's probably that a lot of people simply haven't gotten to know anyone who's Jewish, so they are acting on media presentations & ignorance.

I've never lived anyplace with a significant Jewish community & never gotten to know anyone who's Jewish (except an ex of my daughter's, who was just an idiot--I wouldn't consider him representative of ANY community). I'm big on curiosity about cultures other than my own, so I'd look at it as a great opportunity, whereas a lot of people would just be intimidated by their own ignorance.

Edit: I don't mind appearing ignorant when I am :)

Not really. What I'm saying is that if you understand Jewish culture and history, the Old AND New Testaments make a lot more sense. At least they do in my experience. :twocents:
