    Unbelievable!!!!

BOONE, N.C. – Walter Payton Award candidate DaVon Fowlkes continued his assault on the Appalachian State University and Southern Conference record books, catching a school-record 17 passes for a SoCon-record 280 yards to lead the Mountaineers to a 48-7 romp over Elon Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Fowlkes scored first-half touchdowns of five, 54 and 61 yards as Appalachian opened up a 27-0 halftime advantage. In the first half alone, the senior pulled in 10 receptions for 210 yards, while setting a new ASU single-season standard with 14 touchdown receptions.

With his third-straight 200-yard receiving performance, Fowlkes also set new SoCon records with 98 receptions for 1,562 yards on the season. Those marks, along with his 2,088 all-purpose yards, lead the nation in I-AA.

As always, Fowlkes’ benefited from the play of fellow Payton Award candidate, quarterback Richie Williams. In just over two quarters of play, Williams completed 29-of-43 yards for 408 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added a 23-yard scoring run early in the third quarter to extend the Mountaineer lead to 34-0.

With his 408 yards through the air and three scoring strikes, Williams also made new marks in the Appalachian record book, setting new standards for single-season passing yards (2,824) and touchdown passes (24). He became just the fourth player in conference history to top 3,000 yards of total offense in a season by extending his school-record total to 3,068.

Not to be overlooked was the resurgence of a Mountaineer defensive unit which rebounded from allowing 695 yards of total offense in last Saturday’s 59-56 loss at Chattanooga by stifling Elon all afternoon. Appalachian gave up only 137 yards through three quarters and 210 for the ballgame, including just 71 on the ground. The Phoenix converted just 2-of-13 on third-down conversions, while defensive tackle Arthur Orlebar and linebacker Zodd Kelly snuffed out Elon drives with interceptions.

Linebacker Brad West registered a team-high seven tackles to lead 23 different Mountaineers with at least two stops on the afternoon.

Freshman quarterback Trey Elder went 7-of-10 for 67 yards in relief of Williams to help Appalachian set a new team passing record for the second-straight home game with 475 through the air. The Mountaineers set the mark just two weeks ago with 458 yards passing in a 38-17 triumph over No. 5 Wofford.

Like Williams, Elder added a touchdown run to his impressive passing performance, a nine-yarder in the fourth quarter that stretched the ASU lead to 41-0.

Elon’s Ronnie Dargan ruined Appalachian’s shutout bid with just 2:55 remaining in the contest with a one-yard touchdown run, but senior Michael Metcalf capped a successful Senior Day at Kidd Brewer Stadium with the second touchdown of his career to close out the scoring.

In all, Appalachian (6-4, 4-2 SoCon) outgained Elon (2-7, 1-5 SoCon) 628-210 to secure its 12th-straight regular-season home victory. The Mountaineers became just the 15th squad in ASU’s 76 years of football to post an undefeated, untied regular season at home and just the second to do so in back-to-back seasons, joining the 1998 and ’99 teams.

Appalachian looks to bring the Old Mountain Jug back to Boone for the 19th time in 20 years when it closes out its season at arch-rival Western Carolina. The contest, being televised live on C-SET, is slated for 4 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C. Elon closes SoCon play versus the Citadel next Saturday at 2 p.m.
