On the whole ACC vs SEC thing:

The ACC has 4 teams in ESPN preseason Top 25

    8-UVA
    12-Maryland
    15-FSU
    16-NCSU

    While SEC only has 3.

    4-Auburn
    11-Georgia
    19-Ten

    However, SEC's 3 average a 11.3 ranking while ACC is a 12.5.

BUT.. figure in the two new kids and ACC's 4 teams become 6 (Miami @ 2 and VT @ 9) with an average ranking of 10.3.

This isnt including possible 12th team teams Pitt (14) or ND (20).

    Just a few observations.

Exactly. The ACC is the best conference in football and basketball.

It's not where you start that matters, only where you end up...

And you can't look at this until 2004 when VT and Miami enter the league and start adding extra losses on to each of the other teams in the league. There is a big difference in 9-2 vs. 7-4, which will happen to the NC States and Marylands of the ACC. And I just don't see you getting ND (more than likely they go Big 10). And Pitt. has done little to nothing in football between Marino and last year. My guess for the 12th ACC team would be WVa or Louisville.

ACC will definitely be top 3 but not numero uno in football.

The best conference in football is debatable. If its debatable then who knows who is the best. The ACC couldn't even argue that in football before this week.

I think you're gonna find the ACC making a very hard push for ND and getting them. Louisville is going Big East and although WVa makes some sense - I think the ACC wants more from #12. ACC will offer and ND will eventually accept IMO.

To me - these super conferences could make it easier to get a playoff in football.

Play the conference championships to get top 4 seeds. (after dropping the team limit to 10 to allow Big 10 and Pac 10 to get a game)

Have a one game playoff before the top 2 bowls with top 4 teams - winners play winners.

Not a big playoff (teams wise) but the national champion would have to win 3 huge games to win it all. There wouldn't be a lot of arguement who was the best team.

I agree with Shocker on this one... the BCS is going to be reevaluated in 2005... that was gonna happen one way or another... and if that happens Notre Dame will probably lose its BCS exemption... which means if they want a SURE BCS shot they'll have to go to a conference... their choices are limited really to the Big 10 or the ACC... I'm thinking that they've already been checking out the ACC with the help of NCSU's Mary Anne Fox... I think her involvement will play into this big time... she's a possible vote needed to allow ND to join on BOTH sides... plus she's already that inside voice that can talk with friends on the inside and convince them to go... travel wise its not their best option, but in the end it will bring the most money... the number 2 option is Louisville and if Notre Dame says no I have a feeling Louisville would say yes... if Louisville joined the ACC that's be another kick in the jimmy to the Big East
