once again, though, big spending does not equal wins. What did the Braves shell out for Hampton? He hasn't been ALL that....seriously....Penny pinching doesn't always work out either--you get the rare occasion when a team on a low budget wins, but still, its rare...in the middle, or just above is fine, if you make the right decisions...

Not that much, actually. Colorado and Florida paid the vast majority of his mammoth contract. And I think you're making a losing argument. No, spending big money does not automatically equal a winner (I think the White Sox will regret paying Konerko so much), but it makes things a heck of a lot easier. A team that can spend a lot of money while making smart decisions will obviously always beat a team that can't spend much money while making smart decisions. Even more frustrating is that teams with a ton of money that don't make smart decisions (New York) still beat most of the small market teams as well.

The Rockies will pay Hampton's $21 million signing bonus and a $6 million buyout of his 2009 option, which was declined just before the trade.

Colorado also was responsible for a $6 million salary in 2001, $8.5 million in 2002, a $1 million payment to the Hampton Foundation, plus payments to Florida of $2 million in 2003, $2 million in 2004 and $2.5 million in 2005.

From Florida to Atlanta: $9 million in 2003, $10 million in 2004 and $11 million in 2005. The Braves will be responsible for $2 million of Hampton's contract in 2003, $2 million in '04 and $1.5 million in '05.

Atlanta is on the hook for only $5.5 million of Hampton's contract over the next three years, then picks up the remainder of what he is owed: $13.5 million in 2006, $14.5 in '07 and $15 million in '08.--------

    restructure for sure....

The biggest hit that the Braves will take this year that hasn't even been whispered here is Leo Mazzones departure for Baltimore. All major league teams have backed off somewhat in spending. Have you even heard the worst spenders, the Yankees make any deals? The Mets are throwing mad money around. IMO the only deal they have made that made sense was for Wagner. They vastly overpaid for Del Gado. No one else was seriously bidding for him.

If nothing else if AOL does dump the Braves (Ted Turner already said, No Thanks) maybe they'll drop the cable TV rates :satana:

Delgado wasn't a free agent, he was under contract with the Marlins so the Mets had to trade for him.

True traded for him but there was little interest in DelGado so while the Marlins were dumping salary the MLB GMs all knew except for the Mets, that you didn't have to give similar value for him in return. Mets still shipped off a high talent youngster that they didn't need to.

Gotta agree with most all of this in regards to the braves. Yes the braves have won consistantly and that has been due to management, not ownership. Schuerholz has done a masterful job with the limitations given to him. But like Collin said he has said he hasn't always been able to make the best decision because of these limitations.

Yes the ownership has been able to put together a winning team from the management, but they have not been able to put together a profitable product according to the latest articles. Fans will not put up with crap that has happened with these players leaving.

Think about the Hornets before they left town, they were winning although not like the braves have done, but they didn't get the fan support for a lot of the same reasons. You can either spend 75 million win and lose money or spend more money, should still win with the same management, do things to attrack the fans and make money.
