Anyone seen "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory"?

I hear the movie sucks,, a Michael Jackson look alike that abuses children

 

just got back from seeing a special screening for warner bros employees -- we're babysitting my niece this weekend, so it seemed like it'd be fun. it was okay. my problem with it is really depp's take on wonka. i usually like johnny depp, but i don't like how they worked willy wonka here.

depp seems to draw inspiration from pop culture icons to create his characters. his pirate in pirates of the caribbean was inspired by keith richards. i think his raul duke from fear and loathing was part thompson and part popeye. wonka comes off as being mr rogers on acid with a bit of that cooky "puffy clouds" painter guy.

wilder's wonka was in control and had a whitty answer for every question or remark. nothing escaped his awareness. depp's seems a lot more bumbling and confused.

 

Danny DeVito should play Willy Wonka. It's almost like Wonka was molded off of DeVito.

it's the way he says things and his weird phrases. like he's really afraid of sharp corners on words hurting people.

 

Is Hyme's keyboard broken? Not only does it always type double commas, but the words that surround them never make sense.

 

keyboard? no, i think the problem is elsewhere.

 

The original name of the book is Charlie and the Chocolate factory...the reason they called it Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was due to the Vietnam War and the use of the name Charlie.

 

interesting. i didn't know that. i know they didn't use the real name, but i thought i was more a creative decision to make the movie sound more whimsical or something.
