I remember the days back in HS where they made us to 3 miles in under 20 mins for practice...I use to do them in 18min 30 secs...I couldn't even sniff that now...I'm in the 21-23 min range :(

I am not trying to say that you are intimidated by it, but it is a good idea to let your body see how it feels to go the full 10K, so that when you pass the 5 mile mark, it's not going into unfamiliar territory. It will also let your mind know that you can do it, which is a good thing. I also think that dropping your interval by almost 2 minutes in 6 weeks is a tad agressive.

I could :) - before Filip was born (and I ran out of time) I'd do 5 miles at a 6-6.5 minute clip - with plenty of hills to boot :)

it is aggressive, but I know what happens when I run with others though.....I go fast. You are correct, I need to do a 10k or two soon. I am sure it will be around an hour or a tad over, but once I see competition, I will run alot faster. I can never run competition speed bymyself. If I can bust a couple 10k's on my own at 1:03 or so, I feel sure those extra 3 minutes will get shed when there is some chic in front of me kicking my ass on race day, and the caveman in me trys to beat her.

I have no doubt that you'll run faster - because that is human nature - that is why I would be more concerned with the distance - so your body knows how to react between miles 5 and 6. And go ahead an get used to the idea of getting passed by some chicks - there are some fast ones out there.

Yeah - I am having to start doing that too. I hate running after dinner though. And it makes it harder for me to sleep.

vp, I ran a practice 10k saturday. It took me 1:05. I think I can knock off 5 minutes to be sub-1 hour by Dec 6. I will be 10 lbs lighter, another month of training, and the competition surely will assist me 5 minutes, plus I will rest and eat properly the two days prior. You were right, I had never gone further than 5 miles, and my body and mind wanted to stop the final mile.

That's awesome!! :xyzthumbs You should feel good - seriously. The 5 minutes still seems tough to do - it's almost a minute off your splits, but hopefully the training, weight loss, preperation, and most importantly the competition will knock that off.

As I was running last night, I thought of something else I needed to tell you. How old are your shoes? They only last a couple hundred miles or so, and you would be stunned at how much difference they make. I knocked around 15 seconds off my interval when I replaced some old ones. But you don't want to be breaking in a new pair right before the race because it could lead to blisters. So, if you need a new pair, I would suggest geting them soon. Even if your old ones are doing fine, you might want to get some, break them in a little to make sure that you can run in them, and then use them for the race.

    Good luck!

funny you mention shoes. I have some Nike crosstrainers that are kind of more for trails and I was feeling how heavy they are this week. I need to go get a pair of lighter shoes.
